Hi all,

I’m an MS3 at a mid-tier medical school planning on applying into anesthesia. I’m done with 5 out of 6 core clerkships. Clinical honors in 4 out of 5 of those clerkships. I have missed the honors threshold on exams from anywhere between 1 point and 3 points on 4 exams. So right now, sitting with 4/5 clinical honors and 0/5 overall honors. I’m planning on applying to major cities only (i.e., Boston, NYC, Chicago, Philly, DC).

How realistic of a chance do I have of matching at this point given I haven’t been able to get an overall honors grade up to this point? I know LORs and Step 2 will end up affecting how competitive I am, but definitely not feeling particularly confident right now.

Salaries are still climbing and there is a shortage of Anesthesiologists at the moment, so you can bet competition will be higher for residency as well, especially in desirable cites and strong programs. The Harvard affiliated hospitals, Penn, etc. Many med students chase the dollars and 500K+ isn’t a bad neighborhood. Try to get a good LOR and crush step 2.
