I have a serious question and I am not trying to ignite any fires. I have read in numerous spots on this thread that anesthesiologist typically have no "ego". I almost get the picture that they are "submissive" (I use that term gently) to the surgeons in the OR.

If a person does have a small ego/confidence/tendency to be cocky in a fun manner....would that person not be suited for anesthesiology?

I am not some a** and this is a questions that crosses my mind. I think the field fits my likes / dislikes and was looking for some feedback.

Thanks!

There is no shortage of pretentious asses in anesthesiology. Look no further than this forum.

There is a difference between owning an ego and wanting to be the lone spotlight in an OR. If you're #2, you may want to reconsider.

I've met plenty of anesthesiologists that have a healthy self-esteem and are very confident individuals.

You can also be agressive in your attitude towards work. But, IMO, one needs to remember that anesthesiology is a facilitator of surgery, and not the other way around.

That's the way I look at it anyway.

How true.
I wouldn't say that I have no ego, would you?
How many people just on this forum have more ego than the average professional athlete? I can count more than a few. And yes I counting myself.

BTW, surgeons have large ego's as well. But two people with big ego's can still get along and take care of a pt very effectively. THe key is that even if you have a bigger than normal ego you can't get your feelings hurt, take anything personal, or let your ego cloud your judgement. THe problem people with big ego's have is that they allow one or more of these to interfere with their job.

I'm not ashamed to say- I have no ego and I'm proud of it! I get up early so I can iron my husband's shirt and shine his shoes before I head off to lab. I'm just glad he said yes when I proposed two years ago and I'm not over it yet.

The only thing I miss about gen surg was the priviledge of popping huge butt abscesses and those mighty fine hemorrhoidectomies. I just love being the nobody, I could count the ways but not today.

then again, I haven't quite started anesthesia yet

Nobody needs a colorectal surgeon until they need a colorectal surgeon! And when you need a colorectal surgeon, you usually need him/her really bad! (not speaking from personal experience, but just sayin)

And yes, I think that is indeed Fred Savage at the beginning.
