I am a nontraditional applicant after 3 years of gen surgery, finally saw the light looking to begin anesthesia in july 06. Have applied through ERAS but have only been interviewed for non match positions and no success as of yet. Any suggestions?

You seem to be working under a different definition of "nontraditional applicant" than the rest of this board. In general, the folks on this board are premed (or predent, etc) but are "nontraditional" in the sense that we haven't gone straight from high school to college to med school. Usually some employment, family, postbac, or grad school detour between college and applying to med school. Thus it's unlikely anyone here can advise you in what appears to be a residency level change.

Dorogaya, congratulations on seeing the light. I would email program directors at programs that you might be interested in, explain your situation and enclose your updated CV as well. Getting your name/application out to as many programs will be the key to finding a spot. Anesthesia has certainly become more popular, especially among US med school grads so you might not be able to start this July. In that case, I would recommend doing a year of research in anesthesia or a related field. You might want to contact programs such as Minnesota, Iowa, Advocate IL Masonic, and B & W if you have not already because I know that they had spots for July 2006. Worst case scenario is you could let programs know that you are interested in 2007 positions and they might be willing to set you up for your off year! Best wishes!
