i read in barron's that you are not allowed to use any type of device to help you in measuring angles..
sometimes i will put a pen near my eye so that i try to see the same size for two different angles
are we not allowed to do this??

You can use whatever they give you bfore the test. Depending on the test center you may be able to touch the screen, some are more pissy than others about this.

some centers are more strict than others, although the rules should be universal for every center to make it as fair as possible. the place my friend took his exam... they were very strict about holding anything up to the screen let alone even touching it... whereas at my testing center, they never mentioned a thing and did not seem to mind. if it is angles you are worried about on the PAT, then i would suggest doing more and more of them to become accustomed to using just your eyes. you should get to the point where you only spend 5-10 seconds per angle problem.

Also a way to get a keen sense of angles is to have 4 or 5 small cut outs as identical as possible. Draw in different angles one of them being 45 and each of the others off by 4-7 degrees in each direction. Label them on the back so you don't forget. Then go ahead and mix them up and try to figure out their angles or at least order them from smallest to largest. After some practice you really do get better at it.
