I had an interview at one of the Philadelphia programs today, and by the end of the day, I went from being to moderately interested in the program to contemplating not even ranking them. Has anyone else had such an experience? Here is my day:
10:00 First interview scheduled
-interviewer showed up at 10:40
-we had an okay conversation, but I was not asked a single question. the interviewer mainly told me about the patients on his unit. we talked until 11:10, missing the intern (my next appointment) when he came to the main office.
11:00 Tour with intern
-intern wasn't in reception area when interview was done, so the secretary paged him. he appeared at 11:35 to give me a 10 minute lap through the inpatient unit and emergency department, and then deposited me back on the reception couch at 11:45.
-waited for 20+ minutes for next appointment. contemplated going to get my own luch.
12:00 Lunch with chief
-arrived 12:05 - 12:10, but then got me back late to next interview (she did call ahead, though)
1:00 - 1:45 Interview
-I arrived 1:15, interview lasted until 2:00
-interviewer asked me what I knew about the program (I told him, and told him stuff I liked about it.) we then had a nice conversation about one of those things. and then.... silence. so then I asked an awkward question about rotation scheduling which he was unable to answer. and then... silence. so I asked him questions about his career. then... nothing. then he asked me about something in my application that was literally 10 years ago. Fantastic. This was my best interview of the day.
2:00 - 2:30 Interview
-as the second interview ran over, I asked the secretary to call the 3rd interviewer to tell him I was on my way, and then walked the 2 blocks to the office of #3. when I got to #3, 3's secretary tells me that he is stuck with a patient, and that we will need to reschedule. (!)
I'm a local candidate, but c'mon. I'm not really interested in taking another day off my January rotation to talk to someone in this program.
Has anyone else here had such an experience? I thought that the interview day was supposed to be a day where they put on their best face. If this is theirs, god help them.
