Anonymous SDN Step 1 Census (Class of 2013)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Looks like the mean SDN score is somewhere in the 240s, which is probably around the top 15th percentile nationally. Surprise?

Not particularly. SDN self selects like mad for people who test well. Everyone who got a score they wanted no matter where it is in comparison to the scores listed here, should be damn proud.

I agree. Could the exceptional candidate who got 280+ PM or reply to me if at all possible. I had a few questions : )

note also that people who didn't do as well aren't going to be hanging out in the step 1 forum giving advice after taking the test so there's another selection bias

Although I had a good idea on the rough percentiles for upper-tier scores, I don't think I ever really realized that in a given application year nearly 1500 people have 250-259 (to say nothing of the 300+ who score >260).
Wow, that really puts stuff in perspective come interview season. 😱

They probably weren't here to begin with.

True, but consider that the 360 people with 260+ are divided amongst the specialties. Even if say 10% of them are applying in ortho (seems high, even though high step score folk probably go for more competitive residencies), that means that a score of 260 puts you in the top 36 applicants, which is peachy considering that most programs will interview ~80.

Somebody told me that a girl he knows (whom he tutored) who failed the step 1 is hanging out here giving advice to others. He didn't say it in a nasty way, but just because I was moaning that I felt so inferior vs. all you high acheivers 🙂

Anyway, what I'm saying is that if there's one like her, one would presume there are others too. So not so sure about this selection bias.

Conclusion: Nationally, 50th percentile is about a 222. On SDN, it is about a 245. 50th percentile nationally corresponds to 15th percentile on SDN.
