Probably not work experience, since it won't be a job with set hours. I'd say activities. Definitely not volunteer though.

You can list it under Employment or Teaching, whichever designation makes the most well-rounded application.

just curious.. many ppl on mdapplicants have listed tutoring (a class) as their activities. did they just ask the school not to get paid?

this may sound weird ..is it better to get paid or just do it as an activity to show that it was more a volunteering thing?

thnx

Don't discount having good work experience, though. Showing that you can draw a paycheck and do good work outside the realm of the classroom and standardized tests is never a bad thing.

Let me clear up a few misconceptions:

The section of the AMCAS application is called EXPERIENCE. All kinds of experiences can be entered into this section of the application. Rule of thumb is limit yourself to experiences after HS graduation, although that rule is broken by a small proportion of applicants without hurting their chances of admission.

There are 15 spaces for experiences. You need not fill all 15 spots.

There is a drop down menu of descriptors to categorize each experience. In some cases, more than one descriptor may be appropriate. You must choose one descriptor. It is your choice; pick the thing that you'd most like to highlight about the experience (that you taught or that you have responsibilites that go with earning a paycheck, both are vauled experiences). Whatever you choose, you will also describe your job and provide some text about the experience. Adcoms are smart and they know if you had a paid job tutoring o-chem that the thing was tutoring. The filp side isn't always obvious and it might not be obvious that tutoring or research was paid or unpaid.
