another good one for interviews

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
reading a few posts in that thread, i'm going to have to say that asking "what makes this school unique?" may seem like a great question to ask, but from the point of view of the interviewer, it screams "did not do homework." sure it's a much better assessment of the school from the point of view of a student/faculty, but i think the question could be more precise or directed, so as to not indicate laziness on your part.

also good post. haha

can't be bumped because it's closed, but i thought this might be another good one to read with interviews coming up...thanks LizzyM!

I love how you searched for "Unique Interview Question."

I think that if they are allowed to ask us, "Why do you want to be a doctor?" and "why our school?", we should at least be able to ask them to give us a few selling points. It's too bad that interviewers feel like it is a burden to answer open ended questions about their school. It's almost as if they resent being asked to be creative or enthusiastic about why we should attend, the exact qualities they demand from us. I understand that it would be annoying to interview appicant after applicant who know nothing about your school, but I don't exactly think questions like "What makes your school unique?" put you in this category. That's like saying "Why do you want to be a doctor?" means the adcomm doesn't know why he/she decided to be a doctor.

Haha! I remembered this thread and I have to think of words that I remembered coming up in it...and unique was certainly one of them!!

As for the thread itself, I think it's a good point. If you research the school beforehand, you could have questions that are a lot more specific. I think that in this thread LizzyM even points to questions like "What do you love about this school?" and "Why should I choose it?" being okay, and more answerable than what makes the school unique.

That makes sense.

It is not that open-ended questions are so bad, but the word unique suggests that you want to know something about this school that can be found at no other school. That suggests that the interviewer knows about every school in the country and how this school is unique among all medical schools. That is just unrealistic.

Ask
"what makes you proud to be associated with this school?"
"can you tell me something about [here insert something the school is famous for or that you are involved in and want to continue in med school -- a research or clinical interest]?"
"what is the secret of [insert school name]'s success?"
