Hey guys,

When you first approached your teachers about whether they will write you a LOR... did you first email the teacher and ask them, then if they said yes, saw them in person and gave them your materials? OR, did you ask them in person and come in later if they said yes to give them your materials? OR, did you have your materials with you when you asked them? I know it looks as if I'm freaking out about nothing, but I was just wondering the best way to approach the teachers, that's all. Please don't make fun of me, helpful responses only! 🙂

Hey there.
I asked them in person...its the only personable and respectable way in my opinion. After you have established a relationship with them would be a good time to ask them, and of course then emails are always acceptable. This is my opinion but also how I went about doing it.

I approached each of my recommendors during their office hours and once they agreed I asked them if they would like me to stop by later on, etc. I also explained that I would be giving them a copy of my transcripts, personal statement, and CV - which most of them wanted anyway. I also approached them well in advance of when I would need the LOR so that they could mark it down - professors are very busy and since they are doing you (and me) a favor one thing that you can do is give them a decent 'head's up' concerning your need and thus allowing them some time.

How much notice is enough? I was thinking 3 weeks..?
