Another military transcript question

I am confused about the military credit part of the AMCAS. It says MOS info should not be listed unless used as transfer credits to a U.S. or Canadian institution. I have a copy of my military transcript (SMART) but never used any of my military education as transfer credits. Do I still need to include it? And how the heck do I do that if it can't be entered as a college? I don't want to leave it out and end up with a huge delay in processing.

Okay, you need to be very very proactive about this. Get the huge PDF file from AMCAS that explains in detail everything about filling AMCAS out. On there somewhere it will give you specific information about military credit. In the Army we had AARTS transcript that described all schools we attended (military schools) to include basic and AIT. I had to submit AARTS and then request and exception to transcript or something to that nature because like you I had NOT used any of these schools to add credit to an undergrad school. The AMCAS pdf file is really helpful and that is what I went by. I had NO issues and my application was processed w/o any glitches. Other military folks that had NOT submitted AARTS had delays until they did...so read up.

I have the huge pdf file and it says that although you can submit the transcript without the AMCAS Transcript Request Form, they aren't responsible for innability to match the transcripts etc. I can't get a transcript request form without entering a college and prior to page 27 where it says the transcript is required, there's no info about military education. Then on page 28 is has the section on military education but only describes how to get your transcript. My transcript is available from SMART and it's no problem for me to get it. As far as the transcript exception request, that does not become available until after you enter the school. Ugh! So how do I enter the military education to get to the transcript exception request page?

Okay, I see...what I did for the "school" on AMCAS I just put down "where" I did it like because basic training was on my AARTS I *had* to put this on freaking AMCAS go figure. So I put as the "school" Ft. Mclellan AL or something like that....OR you could also put for ALL the schools on your SMART transcript the place where the SMART transcript came from for the "school"...let me see if I can dig out my AMCAS application...but I am pretty sure this is the way I did it...

Okay so I dug out my AMCAS and yup..I put as post secondary institution/program name US Army training center Ft. Mclellelan AL then date of attendance from X to Y, program level undergraduate, city nothing, state ZZ, country US, no major or minor no degree expected. I think these were separate transcripts or something...from AARTS because I *also* put in AARTS as a secondary school...with a city at Ft. Leavenworth and state KS I did NOT need a transcript exception for this so hence why I filled in state and all. For basic I did NEED a transcript exception and hence put in ZZ. I think that "maybe" my undergraduate school have me some credit for basic (although not for my degree) and because it showed up on my transcript from undergrad I had to *then* request a transcript exception. Clear as mud? 😀

Actually, I think I found the instructions (if you can call them instructions) toward the end of the pdf - and of course not in the section where one would expect to find them. Another case of stumbling over the answer while looking for something else.

My situation: MOS training lasted ~2yrs and resulted in 45 accredited hours. (which we came to learn at the end of the course)
The training was language related and does not go towards my degree. My institution transferred 18 credits (which I persuaded them to change to pass/fail grades to save my GPA.)
My GPA from the MOS school is going to kill my current GPA when I go to average them together.
Will this be somehow separated on the AMCAS app or is there any way to exclude it?
I know that once someone takes a look at the file that they will realize that it is lang/MOS related and take that into account. I'm just afraid that in some cases my file may get overlooked before this is brought to light.

Any info is appreciated.

I bagged my military transcrips, so I can't help you with that.

I'm not sure why you want to transfer MOS AIT credits? If it will get you out of a foreign language during undergrad, go for it, then you should be able to report the credits your undergraduate institution awarded you to AMCAS without any difficulty at all. That's what I'd do.

publius, I didn't attach any grades regarding my language training, just that I have been military trained to speak chinese. I only entered my civilian college grades, good and bad!

I DID in fact get married at DLI! But, it was to my highschool sweetheart (AND we made it all the way through Goodfellow and are still at it.) 😀

I didn't want to transfer any credits from DLI, but my university had me disclose all accredited college courses (DLI being accredited), and took what they wanted, which ended up being 18hrs. I tried to get them to drop the transfer credits all together, which they wouldn't do. Eventually I bugged them enough to change it to pass/fail so it wouldn't effect my GPA.

Even though DLI is accredited, we can leave it out on the AMCAS app?

If I could drop them all together I would love that. I just don't want to leave them out and get hit for a faulty app.

I attended DLI 20 years ago!!!! It is amazing how small the world is getting. BTW, you can easily get your DLI transcripts by fax and they are very good at sending them - they sent them to every school I needed them for - ASAP.

A small world indeed! I already have my transcript, that's the prob.. wish I didn't.
If AMCAS will just take into account what credits my university accepted, that would be great. It's the 2.7 overall GPA from DLI that I would rather keep out. 🙂

Yup, 203rd is still around. I was never stationed here, came here as a contractor so I didn't get the full 'military effect' of Ft. Gordon. Spent my time up at Ft. Meade.

ft gordon (ft resort for the trainees) is a small but nice signal base. there's not a lot to do in augusta so it's actually a great place to go to school. only advantage. dirt cheap!

as for grades ,if they're on your civilian transcript..I think it sticks. I don't know of a way to drop military type schools once they transfer in. see if univ of VA or MD know. they take a lot of military transfer credits.

I had no idea there was such representation of the 97 and 98 series on here! Anybody here at Stewart? I was there from end of 96 to beginning of 99. Also at the 201st at Gordon in 2003 - I got caught in the IRR stoploss and got pulled out of med school midway through 2nd year.

Good luck with applying, if I can be of any help let me know. My intern schedule may be crazy but I can usually get to most things within a week.

I'm hoping that my future app will look 'fishy' with a high science GPA and a lower overall, enough to get a second look at least. I just worry about those schools with a high applicant rate that may have systems in place to 'weed through' the numbers.

I did well enough at DLI (As and Bs) so it wasn't as much of an issue. My grades there probably pulled my GPA down marginally. But by the time I finished college it was about 5 years from graduating DLI, so I don't know how much they really weighted it anyway. I was never asked about my B- in area studies for example. I referenced my experiences with the language in the Army (non-MOS stuff, a humanitarian interpreting mission) in my PS which I'm sure had a positive effect on my app.

My recommendation would be to try to get a feel for the screening practices of the institutions to which you're applying, if possible. If your MCAT is disproportionately good compared to the GPA, adcoms may take a second look. I don't know how much your DLI stuff will drag your GPA down, or what range you're talking about - will it put it below 3.0? 3.5? I mean, is it just failing those stupid culture/area studies exams? They weren't worth that much. Did you transfer DLI credit to another institution already? If you haven't, you could make a case for excluding the transcript entirely, since it was military training (despite the accreditation, it's not a school open to the public) and unlikely to be tracked by whatever systems they typically use. I suspect that if your numbers are otherwise good, and you apply broadly, you will get in somewhere whether you add the DLI transcript or not.

Sorry I didn't really have a good answer for you. I think it will depend on just how bad your grades were at DLI. A few Cs probably won't kill your app. A bunch of Fs could be a problem.

Well, a 3/3 in Arabic is good enough for anyone. I had an Arab linguist as a roommate and that was tough stuff. Back in the cold war days, though, not many people were given Arabic.
