My fiance and I were both applying together this year, and obviously we were hoping to get into the same place. I got into Albany way back in February. He got rejected from there but got into NYMC off the waitlist in June. I was on the waitlist at NYMC too -- all through May, June, and July. 😛 I kept pleading my case to the admissions office, tried a bunch of things to get their attention, but heard nothing, nada, zilch, zero.
So the week before orientation rolls around, and I'm helping my fiance pack to go to New York Med. I decided to go to orientation with him, much to the chagrin of my parents, who were concerned that it would eat into my time for moving to Albany. Anyway, I helped him to move into his dorm room on the Sunday before orientation began. On Monday (August 2), we went to the admissions office in a last ditch effort to see if anything could be done.
We had the amazing luck to run right into the associate dean of admissions, who just happened to be my fiance's interviewer. We told her the situation, and she said that although it hadn't happened in about five years, they occasionally had spots open up during orientation which they filled before the start of class. She took down my number and promised to call if they wanted to take me. Well, after hearing that they hadn't taken someone this late in about five years, I didn't have much hope, just the knowledge that I had done about as much as I could.
The next morning, Tuesday, at 10 am, I was sitting in my fiance's dormroom when I got a call on my cell phone. It was the dean calling to offer me a spot! I accepted, then walked over the admissions office to begin the paperwork that my new classmates had already taken care of. I started classes on the 9th, but I still haven't gotten my financial aid refund, and I don't move into an apartment until tomorrow -- I don't care, we're at the same school for the next four years. 😀
Oh, the best part of it all is that they had already mailed out the rejection letter to my home address. My parents got that the day after I was accepted.
The other great part of the story is that my stats absolutely sucked. But I was in the right place at the right time. I guess there is something to be said for that. 😉
P.S. There are regular posters here who can verify my story, I did not make this up -- I'm not creative enough to come up with something that weird.
