Another Neuro Fan!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
As long as you have 6 months total of internal medicine (floors, outpatient, consults, whatever) you should be good. You can only have 2 months max of neuro though, so don't take any more neuro electives.

Hi All,

So I think I need to do at minimum 6 months of medicine prior to starting a neuro residency during the prelim year...Does anyone know if these HAVE to all be inpatient? If I could get inpatient family med to count, that'd be even better.

So I'm psych-- but like neuro. Beyond the logarithmic decline in my recollection of neuroanatomy, the biggest hurdle is going to be that I will only have completed 4 months of IM (half of which is OUTpatient) and 2 months of inpatient neuro during my PSYCH intern year.

My fantasy is that I could get six months of credit toward that prelim year...This would surely be hairy at an advanced program- unless -the PD were to be chummy with the IM dept and they'd let me finish off some medicine, doubt that though.

Someone on this forum once made this same switch and got credit for 6 months of their psych intern year.

Moral support much appreciated! I've seen PLENTY of psych on inpatient neuro (and I'm not just talking pseudoseizures), so I hope my training will at least be somewhat useful IF I can make this happen.

"A full year of ACGME-accredited training in internal medicine or, as an acceptable alternative, a full year in an ACGME-accredited program in which a minimum of six months of training must be in internal medicine, the details of which must be documented by the training director. The composition of these six months may NOT include rotations in neurology, family medicine, or emergency medicine. To ensure that these six months constitute a high-quality experience, they should emphasize progressive responsibility for the resident. At least two of the additional six months must be spent in internal medicine, pediatrics, and/or emergency medicine. For candidates entering neurology residency training on or after July 1, 2001, at least two of the additional six months must be spent in internal medicine, pediatrics, family medicine, and/or emergency medicine. No more than two of the remaining four months may be spent in neurology."

It's basically 6, 2, and 4* where
-6 is IM
-2 is IM/EM/Peds
-4* is anything but no more than 2 months neurology

Try to see if you can do something geriatrics related that could count toward internal medicine... would also be good prelim training for neurology residency, and decent overlap with geriatric psychiatry, which might be easier to sneak in for someone in a psych program.

So I tried to call the ABPN to get clarification regarding what is acceptable for the 12 months before one starts a neuro residency and they were completely useless (told me "call a program director or the ACGME!).

OK, so my basic question is, can you count two months of psychiatry toward the required transitional year/medicine year?

Someone please! If you know...

I understand you need 6 months IM + 2 months out of the remaining 6 months that must be IM, FP, EM, PEDs, and no more than 2 months of neuro.. So that leaves 2 months that UNaccounted for...Can those two months be psych???!!!
