My goal is become a oral surgeon one day.

I am sure that this topic has been asked before, but i would like ask some questions about

OMFS.

1. Do you get paid during residency or not?

2. If you get paid, how much do the program pay you a year?

3. How hard is it to get into OMFS program?

Thanks for your time.

1 and 2. depends. 4 year programs you get paid all 4 years, starting in the mid 30K and climbing to mid 40K at the end. 6 year programs you will get paid a minimum of 3 of the 6 years, again, mid30s-mid40s. W/ 6 yr programs there is lots of variability of what you get paid during the other 3 yrs, ranging from nothing, to a small stipend, or even full salary. The only way to know for sure is to check with each individual program. Also, different programs may offer other perks, such as housing supplement, book supplement ectect. The salary figures are ball park, I finished residency almost 10 yrs ago, so I'm sure there have been inflationary increases.
3. generally, very competitive. Top 10% class + top board scores + good letters of recs+ externships/research/extracurriculars

good luck

first, thank you for answering my question.

You mentioned that you finished your residency 10 years ago, so I guess you are oral

surgeon right?

have another question, how much do oral surgeon work who work at the hospital base?

Do they work as much as other surgeons do? I am sure that they are on a call constantly

Thanks.

How much you get paid varies greatly based on the program and it's location. The lowest numbers I remember from my interviews a few months ago was in the low 40's as a PGY-1. Some programs like Highland Hospital and LIJ will pay you in the 60's by your chief year.

ACGME funded residency programs pay the same relative salary across the country. Fluctuations that you see in salary reflect different costs of living in the respective areas. Although, I would wager that I live much better off 50k in Columbus than I could of 58k in Manhattan...
