Police: Nurse, 51, kills intruder with bare hands
September 8, 2006

PORTLAND, Oregon (AP) -- A nurse returning from work discovered an intruder armed with a hammer in her home and strangled him with her bare hands, police said.

Susan Kuhnhausen, 51, ran to a neighbor's house after the confrontation Wednesday night. Police found the body of Edward Dalton Haffey 59, a convicted felon with a long police record.

Police said there was no obvious sign of forced entry at the house when Kuhnhausen, an emergency room nurse at Providence Portland Medical Center, got home from work shortly after 6 p.m.

Under Oregon law people can use reasonable deadly force when defending themselves against an intruder or burglar in their homes. Kuhnhausen was treated and released for minor injuries at Providence.

Haffey, about 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, had convictions including conspiracy to commit aggravated murder, robbery, drug charges and possession of burglary tools. Neighbors said Kuhnhausen's size -- 5-foot-7 and 260 pounds -- may have given her an advantage.

"Everyone that I've talked to says 'Hurray for Susan,' said neighbor Annie Warnock, who called 911.

"You didn't need to calm her. She's an emergency room nurse. She's used to dealing with crisis."

Very nice.....good for her. BTW Remind me to never cause trouble in that ER.

This is my hometown . . . I'm a Portlander at OHSU, and I put this story on the MS-1 wall under "Why it is a bad idea to mess with ER nurses -- Reason #17." Great minds.

It doesn't surprise me. Providence is probably the single busiest ER in Portland, certainally relative to it size. Those nurses don't mess around. 👍

My first thought is: what shift is she working where gets home around 6pm?

That was my first thought, too. My second was, 5 foot 7 and 260? Damn. The ER nurses I work with, ex-military or not, are all fit enough to run ten miles and then kick your ass. I'm guessing the RN in the story has been at Triage for like 12 years.

Nonetheless. Good for her, defending her home. Bummer the guy had to die, but hey, adrenaline makes people really strong.

Maybe you need to add to your sig ...and if he was a nurse he'd be an ER nurse

Great idea for a thread.. Add to it.. if you are mean.. you get foleyed!

She whacked the whacker. What a woman.

And her husband runs an adult video store in portland. PORN! This story has it all...

there are actually several portland-vancouver area facilities that see > 70k pts/yr .
not a big fan of providence.....would certainly go to a lot of other places 1st....

"A large woman, she was eventually able to get the slight Haffey into a chokehold and police later found him dead in a hallway. An autopsy revealed the cause of death as strangulation"....................i suspect this story is not yet over....
