Hi all,

I have my step1 about 2 weeks from now.

My goal is 190 or whatever the passing score is. I've been told by my school that I'd be lucky to even pass the exam. They ain't expecting much, and neither am I.

Anyway, I finished going through FA once. I've been doing UWorld at the same time. When doing random questions, I can get 50-55% or so. But this is with a wide range - I've gotten as low as 30% and as high as 80%. I haven't taken any NBME's yet.

EDIT: I'm going to finish the remaining 100 or so UWorld questions today.

I plan to use these next two weeks to finish FA a second and possibly a third time and then take one NBME a day or two before the test. I will not have time for any Goljan lectures or RR.

So my questions are:

1. Should I push the test date forward (latest is the 20th or something)? Or would my approach be good enough to pass?

2. Regardless of what happens, I will have to take an NBME test at some point. Which ones would be best?

Thanks in advance.

well, if your average is 50% on UW and you're going to go through FA twice, statistically you should pass w/o much of an issue. I would recommend doing more than 1 NBME (11 and 12 a MUST as they are new... if you have time do NBME 7 or 6 as well).... other than that, it's crunch time for you. Good luck

yea, but at least aim to achieve the mean?

What good will a passing the boards do when you cant get into a residency?

If you can pass the Boards, you can get into A residency.

Now, I'm not talking about Derm at Stanford....but primary care in cow country USA is not that hard to get.

Thanks for the advice, everyone.

I don't think I have time for another run through FA. I think I'll do a quick rush through and then take NBME 11.

To septo..

Clearly I am not as talented as most of the people here on SDN. As you can imply from my original post, I've had issues at school. SDN is not the place to talk about them.

I would say you are definitely already in the range for passing. I would take the $60 version of NBME 11 asap and that way you can get a good idea of score and see where you are less proficient. I was suprised when I took mine and saw that immuno was my worst subject. I added a little extra time to fill in that gap and it helped me I think. Then you could take NBME 12 (which I think is harder than 11) in the last week to see how you have improved and also to give you focus for your last week of study.

I can't believe your school would tell you that they don't think you can do well on step 1. How did that even get presented to you? Either way, you should use that as fuel to show them how wrong they are and kill this thing. In the next two weeks if you can get up to 60% avg on UWorld I would bet that you are in the range for a 220. I'm rooting for you anyway. Good luck.

Your spelling of "should" and the fact that you are listed as a resident really bothers me. Maybe it shouldn't, but it does.

For every person who scores above the mean, theres at least one that scores below the mean...

I think you mean median. The majority of people can score above the mean as long as there are some poor fellows who fail very very badly. I think the distribution is not skewed though so you are technically right.
