What are antibonding orbitals? Can someone please explain this in a very simple way, I read that they're higher in energy than bonding orbitals, so are they further away from the nucleus than bonding orbitals? I was told that if electrons interfere constructively then bonding orbitals are formed, and if destructively then antibonding orbitals are formed, but what happens if they are neither in phase or out of phase, but somewhere in between? Is another type of orbital formed?
