So....is anyone else getting REALLY nervous about the onset of residency? I just had my graduation ceremony. In the middle of it I realized something. I forgot everything I've ever learned about everything😱! It's been a while since my last psych rotation, and even longer since my last IM rotation.

Oh well, I'm sure my attendings won't berate me too much if I curl into the fetal position fast enough.

Any fan of Futurama can take things in stride.

Name that Character:
"I don't like the looks of this doctor. I bet I've lost more patients than he's even treated!"

And one of my favorite lines:
Leela: "Professor! Where were you at 10PM last night?"
Farnsworth: "Err, where am I now?"

What you're feeling is nothing new. It's a rite of passage that occurs every year right around June/July. It's no surprise that the common saying is that you never want to be a patient in a teaching hospital during the summer.

Make sure you're comfortable with admit orders. They won't expect you to have cases figured out. A clear presentation and ready knowledge about each of your patients is what is most useful. Make sure you've got your pharmacopeia, ACLS book, and Sanford's ID book in your white coat pocket.

Good luck. You'll do just fine and you should be in the groove come fall.

I've definitely started to feel ancy about everything the last couple of days... today not so much, since I'm moving to Maryland tomorrow (YAY), but hoo-boy, trying to enjoy the next/last 3 weeks of freedom is going to be a challenge.

Thanks Sazi. The character is Dr. Zoidberg. I believe he is referring to the former orphan who became a Doctor specializing in Phazer eye surgery, who gave leela two eyes instead of one.

I have another excellent quote for you. "What makes a man turn neutral? Lust for power? Gold? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality?"

Oh well, the best way to learn is by holding your breath and taking the plunge. Plus I've always got my 24 hour support system here on sdn!🙂

Can pick out a Zapp Branigan quote a mile away.

We're going to beige alert your neutralness!

Haha. I also have the almost irresistible urje to korrect pepuls spelling. I hat it when peopl cant put some effert into their teckts.

btw on the futurama topic. Are y'all aware that they are currently producing new episodes? If ever there was proof of divine intervention, here it is.

I hear you about starting up. If it makes you feel any better, I'd say about 90% of the new interns I've talked to are at least somewhat anxious about starting up. The rest are probably just lying....

I am now trying to assuage my anxiety by actually picking up a book and opening it. A novel idea, but it just may be crazy enough to work. Any suggestions for topics I may want to focus on?

In a similar vein. How much is a psych intern expected to know about CBT and whatnot? My education thus far has mainly focused on psychopathology and pharmacotherapy.

If you were to read ONE book right now, I would suggest "The Practical Art of Suicide Assessment" by Shea. That will be the bulk of your work as interns. Everything else you will be picking up as you go.

Thank you good sir. I will have to see if I can find that quickly.

Yeah I am quite nervous too. I start with 4 months of medicine. Since medicine was my first clinical rotation I do not remember a thing. I have been reading medicine on call but it just kind of seems like overkill. Anybody have any suggestions!!!

I start with a month of inpatient, then two months of medicine. I am hoping that epocrates and a copy of tarascons in my pocket will be enough to get me through. I've also perfected my deer in the headlights look while stammering incoherent phrases.

Anybody have any suggestions!!!

A great attending told our graduating class that anything we lack in knowledge during intern year can always be made up by a detailed history, hard work, and a friendly attitude. Sounds corny, but i think working hard and being easy to get along with goes a long way...
