Anxious about dissection and anatomy

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Our school provided a kit and my group all chipped in some $$ ( I think like $4/person). Scrubs can be found at Walmart. You should also pick up some heavy duty gloves if your school doesn't supply 'em.

RELAX! Get in touch with other students and see what the latest gossip about school stuff is so you can make sure you aren't missing out anything.

Where to find the best dissecting set? and scrubs? and how do I learn all of this?

One of the guys in my group had a kit, but I bought one at the bookstore to have extras. This is something you can probably sort out when you get to school. A hemostat or two can also be helpful, and these often don't come in dissection kits. Buy extra scalpel blades, because they get dull very fast if you're having to scrape off fascia (sometimes you just can't yank it off).

The scrubs situation varies by school, but I just picked up a lot of old clothes at rummage sales for very cheap and used them for scrubs. Some of them actually were scrubs, but some were just any old shirt and pants I could get for $0.50 to $1.00. Don't worry too much. The details like this will work themselves out without too much angst on your part. The memorization is hard, but doable if you stay on top of it.

Focus your energy on promoting a cooperative spirit in your lab group. A cooperative lab group is a joy for ever (I LOVED my lab group), and a competitive, whiny gunner lab group is a blight on your life.

If you joined the AMA at my school you got a free dissection kit and a pair of scrubs. Voilà! problem solved.

Wait until you get to your school to buy these things-- you might not have to buy a dissection kit; I didn't. Also as for scrubs, don't buy expensive ones because you'll never be able to use them again, and you probably don't want to wash them with your regular clothes because they'll contaminate them. Also, when you do go into the lab, think about double gloving before you dive into that cadaver because your hands end up smelling like formaldehyde.
Don't worry, your second years will guide you.

Yeah, we could get a free dissection kit for joining AMA, too. Also since dissection is a group thing, it makes sense to hold off on buying any tools until you meet with your group.

Scrubs can be found at Wal-Mart and any uniform store. I've also seen tehm at Big Lots. Buying old clothes at yard sales is probably a great idea (or using any clothes of your own that you're willing to discard). My school did not specifically require scrubs either, so you could get away with old jeans, t-shirts, sweats, etc.. You can also buy them at your school's bookstore, but that's not going to be your cheapest option.

Wait until you get to your school to see what you actually need. My school provided everything including scrubs for gross anatomy. Yours may do the same.

Any of my blogs contains my steps for mastery of Gross Anatomy. You can check those out and see if any of that information is useful to you.

thank you all for your replies. I'm just really anxious about starting anatomy. I know there are whole threads on this, so I won't ask how to study it. but there. I'm nervous about learning the material as well. Thank you!

Use nitrile gloves, not latex or vinyl. Nitrile definitely reduces the smell of the embalming fluid(s) on your hands.

I thought nitrile were the best too. Unfortunately, even with double gloving and two layers of baby powder...the smell cannot be completely stopped. But it does help.
