MS1 here. On the advice of a 4th year, I'm going to purchase:

  • RR Path
  • First Aid
  • RR Biochem
  • RR Physiology
  • BRS Physiology
  • Some sort of pharm flashcards

and study from the UMich anatomy website as my study materials for Step 1. Any study materials I'm missing that you would recommend? Anything for immuno, micro, etc.? I'm covering all this stuff over the next 15 months or so (Step 1 in late April 2012), so I have a fair amount of time.

Looks like a good lineup except you dont need two physio books, i would stick with BRS and drop RR.

Qbanks! Of course, it would be really expensive to get the Kaplan or UW for 15 months. Therefore, I recommend one of those "non-subscription based Qbank" (I don't want to advertise anything here, so just Google it). There are quite a few, and they are great because they let you guage your study and prime your mind to pick up concept relevant to the actual exam.

I don't take Step 1 until June but I'd recommend dropping one of the physio books--I'm not sure why you'd want both of them. I haven't looked at RR Physio but BRS Physio is solid gold (probably the best BRS book).

For micro, CMMRS is really good but not necessarily "short." What makes the book useful is the quirky ways they give you to remember all the random info you gotta digest. Also has some nice tables in it.

And unless you did poorly in biochem I'm not sure it's the place to spend your $$$...

Thanks! I actually already have CMMRS because it was recommended for our micro class.

Re: biochem. I'd just never had it, and I felt like I was missing key points during the test. All the clinical vignettes left me baffled (e.g. a 35 year old patient comes in complaining of fatigue after exercise, etc.).

Why BRS over RR?
like blackadder posted, BRS is gold, i am sure RR is good too although i personally never used it. If you are struggling with the clinical aspects of biochem then you may benefit from the kaplan lecture notes
