Hello, I am a doctor with all my Steps passed and amplified experience in the pathology field. In my undergrad years I was a lab assistant. I entered medical school and my focus was pathology. During my 4 years in medical school and beyond I have been one of the research leaders in a private pathology lab. I had began my pathology residency in 2016 but an unfortunate event where I live, Hurricane María in Puerto Rico 2017, I could not continue to my second. I am currently doing a pathology proctorship for the lab for which I have done research for. I am reading cases everyday with my attendings, reading some some special stains and some IHCs, training in cytology and I have also done grossing. I know that I have been out for 2 years but my training hasn’t stopped and I have been looking for vacant PGY2 position, but to no veil. Can anyone give me some advice? I am really passionate about pathology and wish to finish.

You should have no problem getting a pathology spot. If you can breathe, gross specimens, do what your attendings tell you to do and say you love pathology you will get in somewhere. Sadly that’s the truth. Pathology is not competitive despite being such an important field. It’s like family practice. Programs go unfilled every year and there are a bunch of spots.

If you have to start from first year then do it.

Thank you, I have been trying for a PGY2, but that could be an alternative.
