So I'm wracking my nerves trying to figure out what I need to be doing. As a nontraditional student with multiple transfers my medschool timeline is pretty much a pile of mangled feces. I'm graduating next semester. I will be taking my first MCAT in January(I missed my original date because of a hurricane.). I'm not sure how or if it's even possible to apply for any school to start classes in 2013, but I'm starting to make peace with the fact that I won't be in medschool until 2014 (shudders). My extra curriculars, volunteering, research, and social justice activities are rather strong. My grades are good to go. But now I just can't figure out what I should be doing. What do I do with my year off? I'll drive myself nuts if all I'm doing is working again. Should i be trying to get into a special masters program? Is there any sort or curriculum that would give me a jump start on first year medschool classes? Should I try to apply to the schools in january when i take the MCAT? Wait until the normal time for early admissions? Or should I try applying to schools that will let me without my MCAT score and bank on making atleast a 30?

1) It's not possible. For entering class of 2013, the latest MCAT that is acceptable is Sept 2012 I think. Plus, the AMCAS primary deadline has already passed. You have to wait for the next cycle.

2) Good job. Keep those activities up during your gap year.

3) You'll be applying to medical school for the beginning part of it so that will keep you busy 🙂 Work so you have money to apply to schools.

4) 5) I wouldn't try to do either...

6) 7) You can't. MCAT in January. Scores in February. Make your school list after you get your score. Write your PS, edit it, have people review it, then rewrite it again. Start ordering transcripts and asking for recommendations. AMCAS opens in May, fill out your primary and have everything ready to go and submitted by June 1. If you have time in between all of that, start pre-writing your secondary essays to schools. If you're so on top of your game that you do all of that and still have free time, try to relax and do some fun activities that will keep you sane during this long med school application process. Good luck 🙂

Yep, that is the earliest you would be starting. Use your gap year to do some things for fun, working and keeping up activities of course, but do some stuff you won't have an opportunity to do again for quite a while, since your free time is dramatically reduced once you enter med school. :luck:

I'm going to have to find some really unique, relevant ways to spend this time. This is basically two years of my life I won't be in school. I hope, atleast I can be doing some sort of research.

NOLS. (Google it) That's what I hope to do in the next 2 years. They have various excursions, you see the world from an informed standpoint and gain leadership experience.
