Hi everyone 🙂

so here's my story.. I am a graduate of a joint Medical Laboratory Science program at a Canadian university and a Canadian college (or community college according to the US). So I earned a BSc degree and an advanced diploma.. I worked in a hospital lab for 2 years.. I also have all the required pre-req's except physics which I'm planning to take.. I tried calculating my GPA through AADSAS and I think it comes around 3.6 or 3.7?? which I know it isn't high enough, but would I have a chance? I'm looking into applying to UDM.Also would my work experience in the health care field help? even if little?? 😕 I'm kinda confused and don't know whether it's worth it to start prepping or just forget about it and continue on with my lab career even though dentistry was always my dream profession 🙁

You'll be fine. Your GPA is around the average accepted UDM student.

Your experience in healthcare will definitely help your application.

Get 90th percentile on the DAT (~20 Academic Average) and you'll be competitive.

Call UDM if you have any specific questions that you cannot find on their website.

Good luck!

Go for it! Why not? Your GPA isn't bad.. Plus if you're going to take physics you can possibly raise your GPA. Work experience is good but make sure you shadow a dentist. How long ago were your prereqs taken? If it was really long ago then you might have a lot more work to do.

Thanks for giving me some good hope! I actually have an appointment next week with a dental advisor at UDM to clear things up a bit and see where I'm standing..

Also, when do the applications start?? and can I take the DAT any time during the year or are there specific dates?

oh I graduated in 2010, so not long ago! I hope I calculated my GPA correctly though bcuz it was a bit confusing.. I mean in Canada I kinda stand at an A- average!

oh and another important question.. do I have to have a full course load each semester for my degree? the reason I'm asking is because I had to attend both institutions often during the same semester so I was part time in both but full time in general

Schools will be able to see your coursework and terms. Don't worry.. I went to two different colleges at once for a couple terms and I did just fine getting interviews. Right now is too late to apply for dental school. Next June is when you should aim to apply. Start taking the physics course and start preparing for the DAT ASAP!!

hmmm yea I'm just registering for physics this week.. how long does it approximately take to prep for the DAT? I'm kinda worried since I've been out of school for a year that I already forgot some of the chemistry :scared:

Yes I'm definitely going to do the shadowing.. hopefully 50-100 hours would be good enough!

Dat prep depends how much you've previously learned. The dat discussion thread is a really helpful place to ask questions. I was out of school for a bit and forgotten alot of the materials. It took me a good 3 months to study.

well 3 months sounds reasonable.. that's kind of what I had in mind for myself!

And thanks a lot for keeping my hopes up 🙂
