Any advices from people previously accepted at a residency or internship ?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't mean to take over your thread, but could anybody who's been through the match also chime in about who you asked for letters of recommendation from. Specifically, is it okay to have one of your rec's come from a previous veterinary employer? Or should they all be from vet school clinicians? Thanks!

What type of advice are you looking for?

My letters came from the dean of research, a professor at a medical school with whom I did summer animal model projects, and a pathologist/clinician. So definitely a mix. Pathology doesn't go through the match, it's one if those unique ones along with lab animal med, but I imagine for LoRs it is similar. As long as the people writing them can attest to your ability to do well in the program you are applying to. Better a stellar letter from a previous employer than a lukewarm one from a clinician.

Sorry for being un-specific 🙂

I have never been to USA/Canada, and I did not go through the steps of ECFVG. Therefore, I was asking whether is someone here passed through a similar situation.

Also, I want to know is there any specific points in the personal statement should I take care of ?

Is there any info/experiences about the acceptance rate through the VIRMP ?

Thanks in advance 🙂

Hm. Well that complicates things because as far as I know, many individual programs in the VIRMP require ECFVG, PAVE, or the NAVLE in order to apply. It does vary by institution so you'd have to check with the individual programs. They usually have it listed on the program description. So you'd need to take care of that first. Are you looking at internships or residencies? Many residencies either require or highly prefer an internship beforehand.

Just throwing it out there that lab animal is now going through the match program.

I have checked and found that some programs are foreign graduates-friendly. But I am a little bit skeptical about that.

I am applying for residency as i have clinical experience for at least 2 years.

I didn't go through the match, as lab animal med didn't participate at the time (last year was the first time lab animal used the match. It was... interesting). But my letters came from a boarded lab animal vet I had worked closely with throughout vet school, a boarded pathologist/honorarily boarded lab animal vet who acted as my mentor and whom I did research with, and an anesthesiologist (a huge interest of mine) who I'd had a class with and a 2 week rotation with. So mine were also a mix, but all people I had worked with during vet school. But I agree with WTF, a strong letter is the most important thing!

Most programs give priority to US citizens/people who went to an AVMA accredited school.

As for letters, I had an old vet I grew up with, and two clinicians from vet school. This go round, i'm going for one from vet school and the rest from my internship.
