Pretty sure it was @gyngyn that said his school rarely re-interviews applicants. That is not true of all schools, but it is of some.

BUT...if you are going to reapply, most all schools expect that you have made some noticeable improvement to your application. So it would be in your best interest to take a year off, improve your app and reapply next year.

when you say they don't re-interview applicants, do you mean in the same cycle or do you mean if you are a reapplicant to a school you already interviewed at they just use your previous interview and you don't have to interview again?

He means if you interview at school X and don't receive an acceptance there or anywhere...and then the following year when you reapply, you apply to school X again, there is a very good chance they will NOT extend an invitation to you. They feel like they have already looked at you once and passed, so they don't want to bother looking at you again.

Hey guys,

I was wait-listed at my primary state medical school this past application cycle and since the wait-list has barely moved, I doubt I'll be getting off. I spoke to the assistant dean of admissions and she essentially told me that my application was strong but that my interview "could've been better". My school uses the MMI process, and she said that some of my responses could've been more contextualized. I don't know who it is, but some popular guy on here said before that his school rarely re-interviews applicants. The dean further said that if I were to apply again, they would want to see something new on my application, which means that I need to pursue more clinical or volunteer experiences. I don't doubt that I can improve my application but if medical schools rarely re-interview students, does that mean that no matter what I do, my chances are toast?

I really like this school and it's in-state so I could graduate with less debt and be closer to my family. Please help! 🙂
How do you know that THIS school doesn't re-interview applciants???

Med schools DO re-interview students, just not all med schools do.

You can always improve your application with service to others less fortunate than yourself.

And work on your interview skills.

oh, so you're saying they would get rejected. is it ever the case where they just accept you without an interview if you improved your gpa/mcat/EC's and they would just use your interview from the year before, or would they always re-interview you before accepting you?

I have no idea, but I would think it would be VERY unlikely that any school would use your interview from the year before to offer you an acceptance the year after unless there was some sort of specific agreement between you and the school.

Do research in your year off that yields results. A poster pres or publication etc. that should be enough of a difference to justify a reinterview, hopefully. If not then screw your state school and go to whichever MD school will accept you!

Thanks guys. This helps a lot. I have one other in-state medical school, but that school's median MCAT score is much higher and it's more research intensive. I have a lot of volunteerism, community service, and community engagement experience but only a little research experience. Therefore, I didn't even bother to apply. I can and probably should think about applying to other schools out of state but it would be so nice to save tens of thousands of dollars and stay closer to home.

The other school also has no formal preference for in-state residents, or so the website claims.

Is that a private med school?

If so, does that mean your state only has one public med?
