I'm starting to get a lil nervous... I haven't recieved any invites - and even got one rejection from boston university. Is anybody else in the same boat?

I took my ophtho rotation and research elective late and hven't recieved a grade for them for some reason, does this hurt my chances?

I was invited to my first interview a week and a half ago. Nothing else since then…except for BU's rejection e-mail. I applied to a lot of programs and have only heard from 2 of them. Hope this helps…

which batch was your application submitted in. Mine was recently submitted in 3rd batch and got one rejection already from Suny Buffalo.🙁

I heard about my first interviews over three weeks ago, and I haven't heard anything since. I think only a small number of programs send out early interviews, and the rest wait to review the entire applicant pool.

Lots of time left!

i agree with xaelia...i got my first interviews from my state schools about 2-3 weeks ago, but nothing since then. however i've received a few emails from programs saying my app is complete but they won't start sending out invitations till after nov 1. so as long as you know your app is complete and that sfmatch actually sent it out, and that your email address was correct, have no fear. i have several friends at my school and other schools who are in your same boat. one thing you might consider - if your ophtho grades have come in, try sending in an updated transcript to all your programs directly. from what i've heard it may hurt you slightly not to have grades on record for any ophtho rotations, but if your letter writers are from ophtho you should be fine. good luck and try to enjoy your last year of working for free!

my application went out with batch #2 - i've only gotten one interview invite (which was two weeks ago), and one rejection last week. I haven't gotten any invites yet from programs that I'm fairly certain will interview me (i.e. my home program, my state school, and the two places i did away rotations at). i think (i hope) it must be pretty early in the process...

sisyphus, congrats on the UVA interview - your dry spell is over!

One interview, one invite. Am feeling nervous as well, but this thread helped.

2 invites so far. 1 rejection (the BU one...twice as well)

BU is likely screening for a certain Step I score. There are other programs rumored to do this.

a friend of mine got a rejection letter from BU with a 2 digit 99 score on step 1... so I'm unsure whether that is valid.

I think location has a lot to do with it.

mid- to low-tier programs know that the top applicants are probably not going to end up coming to their programs, because they'll match at better places. so why bother wasting valuable interview spots on them?

i think BU is just making sure they end up with the best residents they can get, since they aren't generally considered to be a top-tier program.

Relax it's still early

250+, AOA, research, etc....and Baylor, Doheney, Iowa, UCSF, and Wilmer all have passed me over so far. I'm glad some of those so-called "mid- to low-tier programs" haven't written me off as some sort of pariah!

hey guys, so I am a more average student than most it seems on this website, 230 on boards, not AOA, did not honor surgery or peds, and no publications, but I did get an interview at Baylor, Iowa, BU, Pittburgh, U of R, CPMC, MCW etc but got rejected from Northwestern, so don't ask me how this system works but just know don't get scared if you don't have the knockout resume, great recs must go a long way, cause that's pretty much all I have! Wishing good luck to all

I think batch 2 maybe 3, not positive

haha ditto

So I have one interview at this point, but I'm still starting to get real nervous. I check my email compulsively and I still get excited when I get the occasional "we have received and are evaluating your application" emails.

i'm starting to think the # of times i check my email is bordeline unhealthy 🙁

same here....

you guys know that this is all becuz of SFMATCH and their inefficiency.
you would think that they have 9 months out of the year to figure out how to do this correctly... so there are no glitches for 3 months.
the programs ( i would imagine) as a result have less time to flip through our files.. and in the process we might get screwed.

i got denied by all those places as well.. with good stats.

to make anyone feel better- I think Wilmer only interviewed 45

of course this has to happen this year. weird thing is that apart from a handful of "we've received your app" I haven't heard anything else besides my one interview. I fear an inbox of rejections all at once coming my way.

not that i want rejections but at least u can cross them off and move on. just not hearing anything is torture. i have 3 so far but hoping for a lot more

Actually I'd be happy with some rejections - I'm starting to get a handful of prelim interviews at random places where I've applied for ophtho, but likely wouldn't take the time and expense to interview there if I already knew I would be rejected for the ophtho program.

I doubt it.. maybe class rank? I know that a program that I rotated through screened based on #s as well as school names and reputations (which essentially leaves me OUT), but at this point I'm just trying to talk myself into the fact that it's too early :scared:

I have the same thing! I have 4 ophtho interviews (out of 60 applied) and like 5 prelims/TYs out of something like 15! I don't know how to schedule, it's kind of driving me up the wall.
Also I just found out that my zipcode isn't in my CAS.... by the time SFMatch can distribute it who knows how much vital mail will be lost. Should I be on the phone calling every program or just count on the USPostal service figuring things out?

Guys,

Don't stress out too much yet. SFMatch was obviously late this year with application distribution to programs and most programs are running behind with application screening and invites.

We just had our first interview day last Monday and most applicants had very few invites at that point.

Just hang on, most of you are going to be very happy at the end!

I'll repost what I put in another thread:

Part of it is a crap shoot. You just can't figure it out sometimes, and it's best to accept it and move on.

For example, one of my classmates and I both applied to all 6 Chicago area programs a few years ago. She got rejected at 3, and interviews at the other 3. I got interviewed at 3, and rejected at the 3 where she interviewed. The two of us had an almost identical list of programs we applied to, but we only ended up with one common interview. We never figured out what made them decide to look at one of us and not the other.

I also wanted to mention that my year, they came in batches. I got 3 or 4 interviews right away, and then it was 2 or 3 weeks before I heard anything from the next group, and then another couple of weeks before I heard anything again.

There were 2 places (out of 30), that I never heard anything from after the "application received" card.

Forget the TY interviews for now; it's difficult to fit them all in, and it will only be an added expense. The only ones I did before the match were the places like Indiana where they had the TY director there to interview anyone who was interested.

Some programs, like where I ended up going, will tell you that if you want a spot at their TY program if you match there, it's your's.

My plan was to move only once, so I scheduled all my interviews for after the ophtho match, and then cancelled all except for those that were in the city where my med school was and the city where my ophtho match was.

You also don't want to waste time doing these interviews and then match somewhere like Utah or Rush where you're required to do it there anyway (at least that was the case when I was interviewing).

i'm getting close to getting really worried. i have 3 so far but i really expected more at this point. i know we've all been waiting but my patience is starting to fail😕
