Just wondering if there is any dental students attending a dental school in Canada. If so, can you tell me how the process works over their. What schools are good to apply to? Is the dental school as competitive their as in United States? Please let me know.

Getting into dental school in Canada is way way way more competitive than in the US. Even Canadians have a hard time getting in, that's why some decide to attend school in the US even though it's costing them so much more.

Hey there, I'm a dental student at the university of alberta. I'm afraid what he says is true, Canadian dental schools are too competitive. I have a friend who is paying lots to go to NYU because he wants to do dentistry so badly. If you happen to actually want to go to a canadian school then the first place to start is by writing the Canadian DAT. I think its the same as the USA one but with a component of manual dexterity (soap carving) where they give you a 1cm diameter x 10cm cylinder of soap and a Exacto knife along with some blueprints on the shape you are supposed to carve. If you are off by more than 1mm on any measurements or off by more than 3 degrees on any angles you fail. This carving is the hardest (most applicants find anyways) part of the DAT.

Check out the many books on the Canadian DAT online (amazon.ca) and the Canadian Dental Assc. site (CDA, I don't know the web address sorry). Secondly, there are Pre-Reqs that you need to get in. Each dental school has its own requirements, and it is important that you do at least 3.7/4.0 on them overall to be competitive (but this doesn't guarantee you get in).

Good luck on your application! 👍

Hello there.. I'm afraid what others are saying is true.. It is way more competetive to get in to Canadian dental school, and I have many friends who wanted to get into Canadian dental school but ended up going to places like Temple, UPenn, NYU..etc.. ( and they will pay a lot higher tuition there..)

in general, GPA of 3.7/4.0 is somewhat bottom line to get in.

I agree with everyone else, last year I applied to Canadian Schools, didn't get in, this year applied to US. got in.
if you are an American citizen, definitely apply to US. schools. you guys have way more options in terms of the number of schools you can apply.
and yes, it is cheaper in Canada, but why do u think that is?
there is always some reason behind it, do you think you will see the same facilities and same technology as there is in US? NO WAY! things are so out of fashion at least in 2 places I have been interviewed, McGill and University of Toronto.
Carving was a nightmare for me, my hands got sweaty at the exam and all the powders stuck to the soap, plus you can only write canadian DAT 2 times a year, which is crazy, if you screw up, it's gone! some people fall behind for this reason. even interviews are different here, they want to evaluate your personality, so for this reason they have psychologists questioning you, it is like you're in a court, nothing like what I saw at NYU, UNLV, LLU. they have different way of influencing your self-confidence, to see if you can still give good answer when someone is making you nervous and anxious, that's exactly what a dental researcher told me at Mcgill. it is like their aiming for "who has the strongest personality?" which is not a bad thing (just a bit cruel to some students).
so bottom line is that : Canada has only a couple of dental schools with a huge applicant pool most with high GPA and great DAT scores, so how can they select the best applicants? they have to have "other" methods which wouldn't seem so normal!

Good luck

Is this some kind of a joke or something. Everybody who's met any Canadians in dental school would know that dental school is magnitudes more competitive in Canada than the US. That's why Canadians with 3.9 GPA come down here. One of my buddies in school is from Canada. He told me that his GPA was 3.9 by our standards and that still doesn't guarantee him a spot in their dental schools.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but what I vaguely remember from my conversation with him at the beginning of the year is that dentistry is hot stuff in Canada because medicine is completely run by the government whereas dentistry isn't. Their government is pretty strange like that. So the amount of physician reimbursement is decided by the government for each procedure and a physician can't just charge whatever he wants, whereas dentistry isn't like that and dentists are free to set their own fees however they wish. He was talking about how their physicians went on strike or something because they wanted the government to raise their pay, which I thought was pretty hilarious  They apparently have such a tight grip on their physicians. That's why it's ridiculously competitive to do dentistry up there and you definitely would get laughed at if you can't get in here and apply up there. Anyone who's got Canadian buddies in dental school can confirm what I'm saying.

Though it maybe harder to get into Canadain schools, it will still be as hard to get into US schools with a high GPA, because they pick students from their state, then other states, then international students!!!!

Wish their was a new school for Dentistry in Canada!!!

TRUE!

or they could have it in Okhanagan!!!
