I am an RDA and its great but sometimes it can be frustrating.

Yesterday I took an upper alginate impression and a patient literally vomited all over my hands and arms.

Any RDA's here that know the struggle?

Been there.... It's a bummer. In the future for this type of patient you can you use a numbing topical before taking the upper impression if they report having a particularly sensitive gag reflex.

Get good at FMX, impressions, and watch lots of videos on different procedures.
With my class they taught us basics but never told us how to actually assist on procedures. I had to learn that in the real world. When I left class I knew how to take an FMX in 20 minutes and take impressions and thought I was set.
I now take FMX's in about 5 minutes which is really what you have to do because the patient will think you are crazy anything past ten minutes.

You just reminded me of my first fmx ... good memories and I remember one patient who just couldn't do the impressions, the Dr prescribed him valium (I think it was for this patient) and the next appointment he used a whole topical gel bottle lol.

Be ready to realize you actually need real life practice and experience to get better! Don't feel discouraged if you feel like you aren't prepared, it's a hands on learn as you go skill rather than learn everything in school. Good luck!
