In the last couple of weeks I got an acceptance to Nova and KCUMB. I was set on going to Nova at first but after visiting KCUMB, I began to chang my mind. My decision was due to the Genesis curriculum, the campus, and the cost of living in KC. Im not sure, but it seems like the rotations are similar and the residency placements are also the same. Does anybody have any good things to say about either of these schools that would help me with this decision? 😕

could you explain the overall aspects of the Genesis curriculum?

Where are you from and where would you like to be? If it was me, it would be a slam dunk to go to KCUMB because I like the midwest. You're right to cite cost of living as an issue because the less you can live on now, the less you'll have to pay back later.

My take on genesis is they start with on organ system of the body and go thru every aspect of it. In the process they cover all of the basic sciences (anatomy, physiology, biochem....etc) that are taught at any medical school. The tests, as explained on the tour of campus, are a mix of questions from the different disciplines that cover the system being studied. It seems like a logical way to learn the material.
But, Im from Cali and nearly froze my a$$ of when I was there last weekend.......it was about 50 degrees. The cost of my rent and utilities (about 1400/month) is cool. I could rent (or buy) a 4-5 bedroom house on around an acre of land in a good neighborhood for about the same.

I think you would be better off at KCUMB. I loved Nova but it was going to be way too expensive to live there, which is why I scratched it off the list. The way I thought about it was, I could always do a rotation in FL if I wanted to see the beach and feel some warm/wet weather. :luck: with your decision.

I was in your same boat, I chose KCUMB b/c I know people who have gone there. The ciriculum is cool, plus I'm used to being from the south, and southern michigan just didn't seem like the right fit.

I would just be careful about letting a couple of SDNer's have a large impact on your decision because its real easy to fall into that. Once the decision is made, your the one that has to live with it so make sure its what YOU really feel is right,.. GOOD LUCK!

i recently chose KCUMB, while choosing between KCUMB and AZCOM. I'm from Cali as well so cold weather was definitely not something I was looking forward to. AZCOM appeared great to me, but when I really thought about it, a school that has been around for a LONGER period of time probably has a longer history of hopefully AWESOME physicians--which in turn means a better reputation and thus a better residency. AZCOM hasn't put out as many doctors as KCUMB and all I hear is GREAT things from KCUMB so I went with it. No pressure. 😉

Best,

Aida
