Hey, for those whom have interviewed in New Orleans, what do you all think about changes in Oschner and Tulane gas programs after the storm?

Ochsner is pretty much the same. Tulane has some issues to hammer out. A lot of the upper level residents transfered out. A lot of their faculty left. They only interviewed their students that wanted to interview. Since I left NoLa last month the Tulane hospital finally opened - 4 or's, the pharmacy and their labs. THey do have an entire other hospital they run in Metairie which is housing some of their residency program - but as far as I know not anesthesiology. I get my tulane info from a tulane msIV going into anesthesia and I rotated at Ochsner in January. A lot can happen in a year so if you are an MS3 asking for next year - I certainly wouldn't make any decisions about Tulane based on their situation right now.

Thanks for the information. I heard about a combined Tulane/LSU residency training plan in July. Also, Tulane may be limiting how many spots to match this year. Although this is an uncertain time for some residency programs in New Orleans, this may turn out to be a smart move for Tulane Anesthesiology by combining resources and talents of both schools to make sure that new residents will be well trained.

Tulane is filling 2 spots in the match. They are approved for 10. They interviewed 8 LSU students and 5 Tulane students for these spots. I would guess they would get the run-off from Ochsner from people that are committed to New Orleans. They also stated they plan on taking people into the CA-1 class, after the match. This means they would have 8 spots available after March for people to start their ca-1 year in 2007. But who knows how many people they could train with some quality.

New Orleans can be a very difficult place to leave. The family bonds here are tight and people also like the South because of the great weather and good food.

The match in New Orleans this year is very competitive. Which is really agaisnt all logic because you would think that people would not want to be in NOLA. There are 14 LSU students applying for anesthesia. 8 of them want to stay in New Orleans. There are exactly 8 spots available in this city. That does not include people like Sugar72 that want to come to New Orleans for family reasons and what not. This also does not include Tulane Students.

There is one huge advantage to TU/LSU: you get to learn under the tutuledge of the Master Dr. Kaye.

Oschner is amazing. I interviewed widely and ranked it 3rd, but if I match there I'll be giddy. Wonderful program.

Not sure about LSU and Tulane, Kaye coming to LSU is a huge plus.

I really liked Ochsner too. I ranked it pretty far down my list and now wish I'd put it higher. I think Tulane was good and will be good again soon, but it's too early to tell whether it'll be 1 year, 2 years, or what before it's a really attractive program. It's important to remember that anesthesiology didn't really use Charity Hospital anyway and that Tulane hospital recently reopened. I'm sure the OR schedule isn't as full as usual yet, but it would probably be busy before we'd get there anyway with intern year yet to go.

Ochsner is a strong program and just increased their class size to 10.
LSU will have a brand new $1.2 billion hospital and double the ORs early 2015. Plenty of upside.
Tulane is still struggling as far as I know. I know they decreased from 5 to 4 last year or two. Cases were down a lot. Not sure that it has gotten much better but I know the least about Tulane.

All 3 are very good programs in New Orleans. But to the initial question, Tulane is still bouncing back from the storm. I believe preKatrina there were 10 residents per year. However, there are Crnas now doing the non complex cases (GI, ophthalmology, etc) and covering most of the scutwork and overnight call unlike preKatrina. Compared to the year before volume is going back up. One of the cardiac surgeons who operated pre Katrina doing heart transplants has come back in the past year. Also some of the recently graduating residents have stayed on staff which says a lot. HCA owns a large percentage of Tulane and is looking to buy two of the large hospitals in the area. Tulane is somewhat of a hidden gem and quite an enjoyable place to be

I have a question about HCA too...I know they are working more and more with residencies. What has been your experience working with them from a resident's standpoint?
