Just saw an ad locally for a family medicine residency for army in my area.. I am just curious how this works. I didnt use the army scholarship program so am I eligible for something like this? Also it looks like a direct application rather than match process. Im not sure if thats true but it seems like it could be a good opportunity.

Generally speaking, they are not great. If it's a matter of location, joining the military to be close to home should not even be an option. You'll want to go to a civilian residency if you can. If you really want to be in the military, by all means join whatever branch and try to match at that location.

Although I trained at a civilian program, I'd suggest Army FM programs are quite good. The recent graduates that I've worked with are very comfortable and competent working full-scope primary care, including OB.

If you're interested in joining, seek out a military healthcare recruiter, not a normal recruiter. Make sure you get a loan repayment agreement.
