any luck getting in with a tier 4 undergrad?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It shouldn't be an issue. The only thing I could maybe see would be them giving you less of a 'cushion' for GPA. Maybe. I went to a state school, tier 4, for undergrad and post-bacc work and wound up just fine.

It makes no difference as long as your GPA is good as well as your GRE score! My boss had a great GPA and good GRE scores, with good experience. She went to IUP which is listed as a teir 4...she graduated from the top of her class at Cornell.... I went to a state school, had excellent and unusual experiences...no so great of a GPA, and a not so great GRE and got into two vet schools last year... I choose to go to Western University.

okay, thats somewhat of a relief, thanks!
What schools are you going to?

Yeah, I went to a Tier 4 school and got into several schools. And only one school I interviewed at was pretentious enough to even bring it up 🙂 Otherwise, no one seemed to care!

looks like you're going to UF... congrats on being a part of gator nation! say hi to tebow for me!

According to that site, Oklahoma State is a tier 3 while Univeristy of Oklahoma is a tier 1. But, OKstate costs more and has a lower (more selective) acceptance rate. What's up with that?? Hmph.

Sorry, side rant. I don't think it matters to most vet schools as long as you can convince them that you've learned something along the way!

Dang, I apparently attended a tier 1 school. I never would have known. I know we are ranked 46th in Forbes, which is based on the production of the school, while US news ranks based on incoming students. Still doesn't seem to be helping me with the admissions process.

Haha, was that school here in Philadelphia? They mentioned it to me. I can't find my school on that list though!

sorry if i'm being an idiot, but what do the tiers denote?

Me neither. I know we have a relatively high rate of vet school acceptance, though.

US News & World Report compiles a whole bunch of data about each university and applies a subjective ranking system. It has to do with things like campus environment, services offered to students, majors offered, graduation rate, quality of education and things like that. Tier 4 is the lowest rank and thus tends to comprise less selective institutions, in theory.

If you went to a lib arts, it won't be on the national university list but on the liberal arts list...There are a couple of divisions. Often easier just to google 'USNEWS' and the name of your school to find the ranking....the USNEWS site search isn't very good. Forbes does some rankings as well, but they are based on things like how much money graduates make, how many pursue post bac degrees, etc. Of course, all of them are subjective, but I can honestly say that I have comapred my undergrad's sciences to 2 cousin's science courses, and there are huge differences in course content, depth, and such, so there may be some affect. Or maybe that is just the difference between private lib arts and state universities. I think if you go to a college with lower name recognition, it might help to mention if it was in a higher tier.

Tier 1 undergrad --> unranked undergrad --> Tier 3 undergrad --> Tier 1 grad school

I have come full circle!! 😀

(yes I know grad rankings are different, but UCD is pretty highly ranked in life sciences for grad studies too!)

I was curious, so I went and looked up my undergrad school.... Tier 4 of course! Oh well, I picked my school based on what was close and what I could afford, so I wouldn't think it fair to largely discriminate based on that. Ohio State accepted me, so it must not matter too much!

I went to a tier 4 school and got into Penn, which really surprised me. I agree with everyone else, just keep your GPA up and get a strong GRE score. the only mention of my undergrad was a question in my interview "what do you think of your school" and i defended it; said that it was great, the professors were great, the curriculum was helpful, lots of opportunities, and undergrad research. If you think it was worth 4 years of your life, then make them believe it too.👍

Pfft I can't even find my school there. I go to a public city university. It accepts everyone (I think you have to put your SAT score on the app to feel official, as a courtesy, but they accept anyone who applies). But we do have some competitive programs, and a huge amount of pre-meds. I'm not too worried.

Ahh... Fordham is a Tier 1 makes me kinda sad I chose horses over my education, guess you can see where my priorities are.

Hehe..I totally hear what your saying Raimes. I am currently in a equestrian science program in Missouri and I LOVE it. I have a B.S Biology but decided to pursue an EQS degree while I apply to vet school. Where are you taking your equestrian courses at?

I'm not sure how good that makes my application look but my interest is in equine veterinary medicine so this only seemed like the right path to take. I'm not sure if graduate school would have increased my chances but all I know is that I love learning and working around the horses every day.

ha I didn't know what mine was. Just saw it was tier-3.
I can't imagine pre-reqs being easier at one school than the other (unless it's top 5 or something). I mean a class is a class. How do you make Orgo easy? 😉
