Any lucks, fellow reapps?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm guessing you got accepted as a reapplicant, and you're thinking this post is a way to find out whether reapplying is universally more difficult or less difficult this year, in October, maybe to gauge whether your achievement is more awesome or less awesome, as opposed to using what you presumably observed as a first time applicant: that med school admissions is arbitrary and frustrating, that for those who don't get accepted, the process is devastating, and that those who do get accepted and smug it all over their still-haven't-heard-yet colleagues are total douchebags.

Here's an exercise: think through what any answer you might get to your question would tell you. I'll help. If somebody answers "omg the stigma is off the charts omg" that means they haven't been accepted yet. If somebody answers "dude I'm not seeing any stigma at all this rocks" that means they got accepted. No answer will tell you anything about "the" reapplicant "stigma" as if there's some secret biannual conference that med school admissions officers go to, where they review the literature and propose a new threshold of scorn for reapplicants, triggering arguments about whether that one Finland trial can be thrown out or not, and the North & South Dakota schools storm out of the meeting in a huff because CLEARLY the only appropriate stigma threshold is the 1994 standard of "reapplicants are to be held to a standard that is equivalent to the top 14% of prior year accepted applicants based on an institution-specific composite of MCAT, GPA and interview score", that 1994 threshold definition obviously having been a ND/SD collaboration.

If you want to learn about how hard it is to get into med school, and if numbers will make you feel better about things, look at the FACTS tables on AAMC. Hint: 10,000+ people reapply every year because more than half of applicants don't get in every year. The last time they did a multi-year analysis was 2012: https://www.aamc.org/download/153708/data/charts1982to2012.pdf

And yes, I'm implying you're a douchebag. Good luck in med school.

So...I got accepted to a DO school. Applied to 30+ MD schools. Rejected from two, put on hold from 2, silence from the rest, including ones I previously interviewed at (I only applied MD last year). When I asked the question, I was genuinely asking to see if people were having better luck with schools they previously applied to. There was no type of malice and "I'm better than you" intent. While I'm happy to have a DO acceptance, I haven't had any positive responses from the MD schools, and that's why I asked. I'm not even going to read your whole post, but the fact that you wrote that much in response to a simple question leads me to believe that you are obviously bored and looking for some sort of fight or entertainment. And to you I say...GIRL BYE! You know NOTHING about me. NOTHING. Actually, I'm trying to understand why you responded at all, since you don't seem to have a reason to be in this thread. You based everything you said off of a question asked and what you believe was my intent. That's it. No background info, no idea of what school I got into, or how my cycle was going. SO, bye. like byeeeeeeeeeeee. DON'T come for me unless I send for you. Anyway, back to my original question: how are the reapps fairing so far??

@DrMidlife You got off on the wrong side of the bed, or something? I'm not a fan of this vitriol you're spraying everywhere. Besides, MD acceptances haven't even been released yet, so OP can't possibly play the better-than-you game.

@reapplicanthelpme2014 To answer your question, I got 2 IIs from schools that rejected me last time and 3 new IIs. I couldn't possibly comment on the stigma because I haven't been accepted yet. FWIW I think this is a fair and interesting question to explore.

Thank you for this!! 🙂

I've had a II at my state MD school where I am a reapplicant and also at Drexel (not a reapplicant there). 3 rejections, one hold, and silence from the other 24 schools. No love from DO schools.

Out of the 9 schools I'm re-applying to, I've gotten 4 II's (all top 25 schools, 1 top 10). Out of those 4, 3 rejected me pre-interview last cycle. Out of the remaining 5, I'm willing to bet that 2 of them are simply out of my league (they were reach schools last year and this year also), and one of them I interviewed poorly at, which may have ended my chances there.
To answer OP's question, no, I don't think re-applicant stigma is that strong unless one submits essentially the same application, or if one convinced a school that they were poor fits through a bad interview. The schools that offered me a II as a re-applicant generally fit the profiles of the other schools that offered me II's this cycle.

I have gotten II from 3 schools that rejected me pre-interview last year, however my application is significantly stronger this year. (+5 points on my MCAT, an Organic Chem teaching position, and a couple awards). The rest, I am still waiting on. I applied to 20 schools (mixture of MD/DO, but actually hoping for DO due to my personal beliefs and career goals.)

I have gotten 3 new IIs (one top 25) and one repeat II from last cycle so far. GPA increased minimally, got a few awards, and increased MCAT +6 points

Nope. 3 II which have all resulted in WL. So long med school dream.

I use to think that but really it's not that simple. I have enough money and will inherit a lot so I'll never have to work a day in my life so in the end I don't reslly care anymore.
Sportsdude... I know it must be really frustrating and I'm sure platitudes don't always help... but you could still write letters of intent...just to try maybe? My friend got waitlisted several years ago at Hopkins and he swears his LOI got him in.

I got 5 II from schools that rejected my preinterview with one acceptance, one II to attend, and 3 still waiting to hear back from. The two schools that interviewed and WL me last year have been more or less silent.

I have had one interview from a school that I interviewed at last year with the same result: WL. Frustrating! I significantly improved my app through more clinical and community experience, and it was better written in general. I've had three new interviews this year with another WL and 2 yet to hear back from. This process is maddening!!

For MD programs I got 1 II from a school that screened me out pre-secondary during my first app cycle, it ended up in a rejection but I interviewed poorly and kind of expected it. Have been rejected from about 6-7 and waiting to hear back from ~16

I'm done with the app cycle. I got 3 DO acceptances and 2 MD. I chose LECOM DO for personal beliefs, location for my family, their highly structured program and board pass rates. I am very excited!!

I am a reapplicant, and got 2 ii at schools i was rejected at last year. Also have a ton of friends who reapplied last cycle and got accepted into schools that previous rejected them as well. Besides the Unversity of California schools where reapplicants have a really hard time, I think as long as you show improvement from your first cycle they will reconsider you.

I'm a reapp, applied to 8-10 schools this year, maybe 3 I wasn't a reapp at. Last cycle I had 3 MD interviews, where I was waitlisted. This cycle I got 1 II from my state school which interviewed me last cycle, and I was accepted. Except for one other school (another state school) I'm interested in, my cycle's over. I withdrew everywhere else.

So far: 0 IIs last cycle to 9 IIs this cycle.

Acceptance still pending... sigh..

So this thread started off on a bad note but maybe future people will find this info helpful if you don't get in the first time.

I applied late the first time (primary in late july and secondaries in Late sept/oct) and only received 1 II where I was rejected. Got some extra volunteer/clinical research/shadowing and applied as soon as possible and have 4 II so far and an acceptance.

Like stated before, applying early IS IMPORTANT. The sooner your file is in the batch, the greater the chance they'll view your app before other people when all the interviews are available. Be well rounded and don't give up, you can use it as a learning experience in both reality and in interviews

Could not agree with you more. Last cycle, 2 II's, 2 rejections. I decided to do some shadowing during my last semester of senior year and re-apply this cycle. Applied earlier in the cycle this time, and put in more effort with my secondaries.

So far, 9 II's (6 from top 25 places), 1 acceptance (also from top 25), and as far as I'm concerned, my interview season is (voluntarily) over.

So far, I have gotten 4 II from schools that rejected me last cycle, 2 of which I interviewed at! Here's to hoping for a better outcome this time!

2 MD acceptances from two schools that rejected me pre-interview when I first applied. 1 WL from another school. 1 II coming up from a school I didn't apply to last time.

I applied mid-July this cycle, processed by early august, and submitted my secondaries within 1-2 weeks from the date I received them. I know people emphasize on having your primaries in early but that will not help you if you sit on your secondaries for a month or so. So submit your secondaries early as well! 🙂

Good luck to those still waiting on decisions and congrats to those with acceptances!

6 II's, only one from a place that I applied to last year. 2 acceptances, 3 WL's, 1 II decline, and a partridge in a pear tree. Hang in there folks, being a reapplicant is far from a death sentence. Btw, the one place that I interviewed at last year yielded the same result this year - a WL. Apply
broadly people!!

This is exactly why I created this thread...thank you all for the productive posts!! Hopeful this will give some reapplicants hope! 🙂
