Hello all,

I am a magician (been performing close-up shows for years), and mentioned it in all my apps.
If any of you did the same, were you specifically asked to show a trick during the interview? And if not, did you find some way of still performing it? I am going to bring a nice short routine to do, but if they don't ask for it, I wasn't sure how to offer. Unless I just straight up offer to show them.

I wouldn't call myself a magician, but I do a few tricks for my students, adn they always get a kick out of it. But they're also special ed, so even the most obvious tricks amaze them. But I do have some better ones that hte other teachers and paras really like.

Anyway, if you mentioned it on your app, you can expect it to come up on your interview. It's something unusual, that's for sure. I don't know if I would bring a whole routine to the interview, maybe a couple small tricks that would use things that you would have on hand anyway. I do a really cool trick using a ring and a rubberband. But I wouldn't show up with a bag of supplies, it might look a bit odd.

As for how to go about it, if they don't ask you about the magician, I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to show them. You could always say at the beginning of the interview, when they ask you to tell me about yourself, you can say that you're a magician,a nd that actually, (put hand in pocket, pull out coin or whatever) then go into the trick. But I wouldn't do a full routine unless they asked.

Although I'll admit, one of my interviewers asked me how I keep the attention of my students, and I said I do things like "reading their minds" with the number things that always come out to the same number. It helps them with their basic arithmetic skills. I also do a bit of ventriloquism, and at the end, the kids know that they can usually expect a magic trick or a juggling lesson. Honestly, I was half expecting my interviewer to ask me to do some ventriloquism, but he didn't, and I didn't offer to. But I still got accepted, so I guess he didn't really care that much.

Good to know, thanks.

By routine I didn't mean anything big, just a flowing set of 2-3 small tricks. as opposed to trick1, followed by trick2 etc.

if they don't ask you to perform a trick...don't do it!

i think when they ask you "Tell me about yourself" and when you go through a list of things you do...bring that up...and show a unique magic trick. you heard of turning the dollar bill upside down? haha thats a cute and fast one to do. it will definitely make you a candidate to remember. again, this depends on your personality and how smooth you can work this routine in your act 😉

and then i check your mdapps page and find out you are canadian. oh boy that changes everything.

At mac: there are mini bell ringer type interviews. most likely this will never come up in a discussion

At queens, western and toronto: there is a panel interview. so its harder to work this routine in (there are 3 eyes judging you), and also because the questions are pretty structured. however, i have a couple friends who have gone through this process and always been asked to show something unique about themselves. i personally know a friend who was a Origamist (is that a word? haha), and she made something pretty cool object out of paper (she picked this up while teaching arts and crafts for the underprivileged). perhaps here is a good place to insert your unique ability 😎

but again, stats like yours, i would just smile all the time 🙂

Whether or not you risk showing them your magic trick depends on where you fall in the magic spectrum. Are your skills closer to David Blaine or are they closer to my uncle leo's?

I do a little magic and I definitely mentioned it (I now go to Hopkins Med). Since you're pretty much like a pro, I'm sure they'll talk about it and showing it would be really neat; again, it's something really unique and interesting to add to your application!

i think you should use your slight of hand to steal something from your interviewer. Then you can blackmail him to get a good recommendation. Just make sure to lift something worth compromising their integrity over. Like a toupee or something...

Yea, I'm forming some "edgy" routines, which culminate in: so.. if you get it right, I'm rejected. If you're wrong, you let me in.
Ofcourse, its well controlled that I am right.
Or something simple like a custom card that says my name, class 2011.. something nice like that.
I hope they have a sense of humour.

Yea, with a panel, I might have to change some stuff around. Cause I do only sleight of hand (I don't believe in smoke and mirrors), angles are a big thing.

To previous poster: yea, I'm david blaine style, that kind of "street magic". I refer to it as prestidigitation in the apps.
Thanks for the replies.
