Hello, I'm relatively new, though I've been lurking sans account for a few months. I applied this cycle.

I've just graduated with an applied math degree and am taking this year to finish up pre-vet pre-requisites.

Are there any math majors out there? I feel bad learning so much about math when I'll probably never use it again at the level at which I learned it. Any thoughts of completing both DVM/PhDs (either sequentially or concurrently) so that your quantitative skills/knowledge get some application?

My undergrad degree is in applied math, but I also have a BE and an MSME. I want to do med device sorts of stuff. Math is fun although yeah, that really abstract stuff isn't all that useful. Shouldn't matter in the end though, and the regular math can be really useful.

Hey!

I have my BS in mathematics. My undergrad didn't do discrete vs applied...so it's just "mathematics".

Have some faith in the math degree! As you know, it isn't about numbers or anything like that....it's a different way to think. That's a concept I stressed in the PS - thinking logically (and like a machine)!

I pretty much know my BS is useless, but honestly...the DVM is the one that counts! We are out there...few as we may be, but it is possible!

Best of luck!

PS - The world's shortest math joke: let epsilon be less than zero! HAHA

I also got my BS in math. Most of the actual math I learned in school, I will never ever use again (nor do I ever want to), but that is hardly the point as someone else already mentioned. I also stressed thinking logically in my PS, and my math majorness came up as an interesting topic in interviews. I think that little bit of diversity really helped me stand out. Plus it helped me get a stellar math GRE score.

I had no idea there were so many others!

I have my BS in Applied Math. I definitely miss having math courses and I do feel bad that I will probably never use it to the degree at which I learned it in undergrad. However, I did just discover that in my third year there is an elective in "intermediate biostatistics"!

And thank goodness for that stellar math GRE score, something had to compensate for the NOT stellar verbal GRE score
