Hey.. any of you have a miracle story about a student who was passionate about radiology but didn't have the grades for it..... and eventually got in a program?? you could reply to the thread or just PM me.

Every year there are some stories, just make sure you find an up to date, savy advisor to give you some guidance on the approach and be persistent. The competition is pretty stiff, but unlike most every other competitive specialty, there are over 1000 spots each year, giving your a better chance to squeak in if you don't have great numbers. But it's all relative, so make sure you get that advisor if your can.

Rodamus,

I'm trying to be this year's miracle story. Crappy board scores, average grades, no research. But fortunately I've got some other things going for me. Plus, I plan to marry one of the program director's daughters, or at least get one pregnant. Okay, just kidding about that last part. Seriously though, my main concern at this point is just to get as many interviews as possible. It's going to be an interesting year. PM me some time and I'll let you know how it's going. Any relation to Optimus? Sorry, had to ask.

Yes. This candidate ended up being our top rank. My advice is to apply broadly to a lot of programs, and hope for the best. Your chance of matching if you don't apply is zero.

are there any other tactics in getting as many interviews as possible. It's a shame that just 10 questions (I maybe underestimating it) on the board exams puts me in a category that needs a miracle to get into radiology. Everything else in my application is strong, but not the boards. Oh Woe-is me...

A few years back, I knew a guy who scored 200 on step 1, but busted his rump doing rad research in 4th year. He matched into our rad program. I'm at a top 20 med school and probably top 20 rad program. Just apply broadly.

I've heard program directors are lenient to students in their own programs if they have really contributed something (along the lines of research) to the department or if they are socially bound to the area ( like if they are married).......

maybe I should go get married....
