Hey guys. Any preceptors out there? Since I was in pharm school, I always aspired to be a preceptor. Before I was in the Chains and since they shift us around from store to store so much, didn't think it would work. Then later in my new job, my director always brushed it off whenever I asked for whatever reason. Now I'm looking for a new job and was thinking I might finally become a preceptor somewhere.

What are some pros and cons to being a preceptor? I love teaching and would definitely enjoy it, but does the college give you any financial compensation? Any other pertinent info regarding being a preceptor?

Thanks in advance

Some colleges give a modest stipend for precepting - but check with your company about who actually gets the money. I work for a hospital and any compensation I get for taking students goes to the department. It doesn't really correlate to the amount of time I spend teaching the student.

Being a preceptor is an important job...should only take students if you have the time and ability to teach them. I enjoy it, but it takes more time to do it right than you think. They have to do so many projects and evals....it all adds up. Your day to day tasks may take longer with the time added to explain or show a student how to do something. That being said, I enjoy it, but I don't over do it with taking a lot of students...just 2 APPE per yr on my clinical specialty rotation.

I say go for it. It is the greatest experience you will have has a pharmacist. I presently have three interns. They become your surrogate professional children. You have a chance to shape future pharmacists. It keeps you on your toes knowledge wise. Remember the words of the wise man:

Much I have learned from my teachers.
More from my friends than my teachers.
But from my students I learned the most.......
