SAT: 1250/1600
GPA: 3.54

what are some BS/DO programs i can realistically get into? i already applied to NYIT, but are there any other programs that i have a shot at?

thanks.

I thought the SAT was out of 2400 nowadays? Your GPA seems mid-high average.

I had a friend that got into a BS/MD program but his stats were like off the charts. He had like a 4.0+ GPA, was a Rhodes Scholar, I dont remember his SAT but it was something like in the 99 percentile. However, I'm not too sure about the BS/DO program. I know some people that got rejected from a DO program with like a 3.6 GPA and 30+ MCAT. Realistically, I think your stats depends on the school you're applying too but some of the more well known DO schools I'm not too sure.

Hey buddy!!! there are variety of BS/DO programs .... Touro College has one with TOuroCOM,, Clarion University of Pennsylvania has one with LECOM, Canisius College has with LECOM, St. Bonaventure has with LECOM, and NYCOM as u know... But what I think Touro is better because its actually their own med school and u take ur science classes at Med school and so u have more exposure to med life. U also have cadaver lab in undergrad which is cool. and biggest advantage is that if u get a really good MCAT score and u wanna shift some other med school ,, u can do that 🙂

yeah i checked their requirements but they ask for a 3.8 GPA

i might just apply there b/c they might recalculate GPA since my gpa stinks compared to what it should be since i did real bad in spanish as a sophomore =\

it is but most colleges especially these BS/DO programs only require you to send in math / critical reading scores (out of 800 pts each) so not many take a look at writing from the requirements i have seen on their webpages.

my real purpose of asking if can you tell me which programs i can realistically get into with my stats? because i would like to apply ASAP - thanks.

considering that most of the people reading your thread are probably post graduate college students or undergraduate students, I am not sure if you will get your answer. So, I would just make the phone call and ask them to see if you stand a realistic chance; most of them will give you a straight answer. Good luck!!!

Without knowing anything about your high school (top tier?), what classes you've taken (is that a 3.5 in all APs or regular courses?), and other extracurricular activities, it would be impossible to gauge what your chances are.

That being said, your stats are, in general, on the low side for competitive programs of any kind. If I were you, I'd contact every BS/DO program out there and ask what they're looking for. Explore all your options, but realize that just because you don't get into one of these programs as a high school senior doesn't mean med school is out of the picture for you.

Man, ranking high schools now??? When is this competition going to end? Pretty soon people will be competing to get into the best pre-school programs.

Seriously, lol at the idea of coming up with a tiered system for high schools. Sure, some high schools are more academically challenging than others, but come on...

Rhodes Scholars are college graduates. They don't take people right out of high school.

I mean I get it ... life is competitive, and you want to have every advantage, but at some point, you really start to deprive kids of necessary life experiences. IE: high school. I know I feel like I personally missed out on some of the 'college experience' because of busting my hump to get into medical school. I don't regret it, but compared to some friends, I definitely had a difference experience in college than they did. Good or bad, it was still different and I think a little off what is considered the 'norm' (if there is such a thing in life).

Shippensburg University does one with PCOM.

apply to the same colleges as i stated before ... i got accepted into all of them 🙂

Clearly, you don't live in NYC....where people viciously compete for pre-schools. Like, get on a waiting list the day the kid is born.

While I don't necessarily agree with US News & World Report's high school rankings (the system in deeply flawed), colleges do use a system to rank high schools. That way, they know that a 3.5 from TJHSST (#1 public school) is way different than a 3.5 from other far less competitive and academically challenging schools. Being aware of how college admissions works is key in getting into the school of your choice. Ideal? No. Reality? You bet.

Before applying to BS/DO programs I would seriously consider your options. You will be looking at a large course load, and most of these schools still require a certain undergrad gpa/MCAT score to continue on to their affiliated DO program.

You could alternatively apply to undergraduate schools that specifically appeal to you, and just nail your classes. When the time comes, you can apply to any MD, DO, PhD programs that appeal to you.

Either option is great, but personally I would be hesitant to start on such a narrow path straight out of high school.

As a mom of 2, I can tell you straight up that there is absolutely a lot of competition to get into the best pre-school programs.........
sad, but true.

I come from the other coast, and I think we are just as batty about that stuff over here too.

Crazy, but I believe you!!

its not a narrow path. It is a great back up to have. Back when I did my program, I just needed a 3.3cGPA and a 24 MCAT score to get into the med school (not a bad deal). You can always apply out to other med schools as long as you study hard for your MCATs and use your program as a back up (like I did). I would say go for it.

I'm sure they raised the requirements now to more like a 3.5 and a 26ish...but still not a bad deal for a guaranteed admission.

Touro , is this a decent program? it doesn't look that expensive either, Pisiform did you go to Touro?

and do you know if you are in the BS/DO program there, are all your classes on one campus?

and can i not apply or something until i graduate since they listed a HS diploma because it asks on the application if you have graduated yet or not? which is a weird way to ask rather than just asking for the grad. date.

anyway they weren't picking up so i emailed them.

Hey.,,, forget where I am right now 🙂 but my cousin applied there and he is studying so i did all his application process. You will be doing 20 credits per semester and you will bw having science classes in Medical School Harlem 125th street and the rest of non science classes at 23rd street midtown campus. Dont be startled by the campus because 23rd street one is really small. The first time i went there to get application for my cousin I was like WTF!!! but its a good school overall. You will find many minorities and it is culturally diverse. You will be taking summer classes too unfortunately so technically no summer break. and i recommended this for my cousin and its pretty good. He is in the freshman yr and they are doing Cadaver Lab (actually working on Cadaver because they just got approved by NY state to allow undergrad students to Cadaver lab). Its pretty good though. And try this phone number :
Dean Lenin Ortega (assocaite Dean) 212-463-0400 Ex 5440 He is incharge of the BSDO thing

Umm.. I think they already do in some places.... I know my parents didn't have an application process for my son to be a student in their house and they've done awesome with my boy. I know that he'll be assured medical school accpetance with their name on his application.

And here I think the people who get so wrapped up on the competition are the ones who can't carry on a conversation or relate to the people they will be taking care because they've never stopped to smell the roses. I also think that sometimes the process of living and enjoying life in a non-academic environment isn't so very bad. It got me into medical school with two amazing boys, a wife, and a life. I would do it all over again and I"m not particularly worried about my kids high school SAT score.. 960 here, and I don't feel it's cost me a thing.
