Well, did anyone get scholarships for d-school. If yes, please share the school, maybe some stats, why u think u got it.......

Well, I can't speak for myself since I'm shooting for 2006 for dental school, but my friend recieved a scholarship. He's going to attend Baylor. He received a 4 year scholarship that covers everything except living expenses. He is entering early (no bachelor's), but has a 4.0 GPA and averaged 24 on the DAT.

Upenn offers scholarships to people who have a GPA above 3.7 and scored above 20 on their DAT's. The scholarship covers half of the tuition for 4 years.

is he an underrepresented minority?

if i'm correct, i dont think any schools give out full-ride 'merit' scholarships.

Texas schools have their own peculiar ways of doing things. You can't compare anything that goes on in Texas with the rest of the country. 😀

As for these huge scholarships you hear about at UOP, Penn and other private schools - a lot of people get those. I think they are built into the price of the tuition; sort of like the way car dealers will mark up the true asking price a couple grand to leave some wiggle room. That way they get the amount of money they really wanted in the first place and leave you feeling like you got a really good deal with the scholarship - when in fact you just got screwed. 🙂

There are private scholarships out there through local dental societies and such but these are usually relatively small (~$1000 or less). Basically, you're pretty much on your own as far as finances go. 🙁

But you'll make it up later, right? 🙂

dmoney,

Do they have to score above 20 on every section?

I don't think so, I actually got the scholarship and let me tell you man, I didn't score above 20 in every section. I got a 17 in the reading section (I had to run to the bathroom 😀 ) and I got 18 on the PAT (I couldn't see those shapes for ****) but I was still able to pull an overall score of 22 somehow, so I guess you need a total score of 20 and up and not in each section. hope that answers your question

Some schools DO give out full *merit* Scholarship. I was offered one from my state school, but I chose to attend U Penn. My state school is an awesome school, but I have decided to attend U Penn because I want to practice in north, not south. So keep those GPA's up, predent !

i received a small scholarship of 6K a year from tufts...it's almost play money compared to the total bill for each year but hey it's something.

Nope, he's as non-minority as they come! He's from Utah, so I don't know if being from a state without a dental school had anything to do with it or not. But as far as his extracurriculars, he had a scholarship to play basketball at his college, he worked in the chem lab, and also served a 2 year mission to Spain for his teacher. Speaking spanish has to help (at least I hope so since I was right there in Spain with him!), especially in places like Cali, AZ, and TX.

Any Scholarship from Columbia/Case/UNC?

I heard there is no merit scholarship from columbia

Hi,

There are more scholarships available once you get accepted. I don't think they're worth too much but can range from $1K to $5. Examples include the ADA Health Promotion scholarships, Listerine Prevention Scholarship, Minority Scholarships, some grants/scholarships from private foundations,etc...

Jess

I'd like to bump up this thread... has anyone else recieved or know of people that recieved merit scholarships from dental schools/ if so where and what were their stats?

I got full tuition renewable for 4 years + free Vitalbook, which explains the exclamation point in my sig.

does anyone know if these schools give out schaolarships: u michigan, u detroit, marquette, case, indiana, iowa, minnesota? if so how much and what kind of stats do you need to have a chance?

Got a scholarship from U of Minn. Well actually they call it an "out of state tuition waiver", so basically even though I am not a resident I only have to pay in-state tuition. I save over $50,000 after 4 years. Also got a $4000 scholarship to do research this summer for the dental school, but had to turn it down because I am getting married this summer.

The only thing I'm wondering about now is how hard it is to maintain that 3.2.

BTW, did you accept it?

Cong. Dr. Benj 😍
btw, how did you get that research job?

how come no schools in my state or nearby offer full scholarships for merit 😕 😡

I had a lot of research experience so I assume that's why they offered it to me. They offered it to me with my acceptance letter on Dec. 1. I believe they offer it to 10 or so students every year (including incoming first year students such as myself).

what do you mean- how did you get that scholarship, may I ask?

Wisconsin students have reciprocity in Minnesota, if I'm not mistaken? Same with North Dakotans. Dr. BenJ...what % of U of Minn students are out of state? I am going to apply but I am a NY resident. Minnesota is at the top of my list.

Minnesota has reciprocity with N and S Dakota, Montana, and Manitoba. It DOES NOT have reciprocity with Wisconsin (hence the scholarship). 33% of the class of 2008 came from states bordering MN (they give preference to these states) and 2% (2 students) came from other non-resident states (colorado and Hawaii). Hope this helps.

Got a full ride---took the Army HPSP scholarship---I am excited about it, no worries, and I am happy to serve for the four years after school on active duty---I hope to get stationed in Europe, but if end up in the Middle East---I think they still have the one million dollar reward for capturing or killing Osama---plus it will be nice to gain the extra confidence of working on soldiers teeth before I go into private practice

Bringing this thread back up.

Do these scholarships limit on being a US citizen or permanent residence? What about Canadians and international students? Also are you automatically considered for the scholarship just by sending in your application or is there some separate thing you have to fill out/indicate?

Can some people who got scholarships give some stats?

It seems the scholarships people are mentioning are merit based, what about the financial aid awards that are listed in the ADEA book? Do they limit on residency/citizenship?

Thanks in advance for answering.

I like this thread. Anyone else get scholarships?? if so, what are your stats?? did race play a part?
