I know everyone in second year is always talking about Step 1. But I'm recently noticing that I'm forgetting information that I learned just a month ago. Had a micro exam that covered all bacteria a month ago, BAM.... I've forgotten a lot of the details.

We're learning a lot during second year and it's coming at us fast. Anyone else getting worried about Step 1?

Micro always gets forgotten quickly after the first pass. It all comes back pretty quickly though.

When you don't use things, you lose them. I'm pretty sure I've forgotten 90% of first year, and forget most material by a few weeks after an exam. So I am a bit concerned, yes. But I'm hoping the familiarity will make it easier to relearn when it comes time to start studying.

Is Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Easy the best book for micro?

It's the only book for Micro. Bonus points if you draw the bacteria with the bulldozer.

don't worry. micro makes no sense when it's presented at the beginning of second year in a vacuum. the clinically relevant (and therefore step 1 relevant) bugs and diseases from micro will come up again during the course of second year so this won't be the last time you see it. much like anatomy rote memorization doesn't result in retention of the material but when it's placed in context it starts making sense and finding its place in your long-term memory.

Thanks for the input.

I've been using Micro Made Ridiculously Simple and it's a great book. I'd recommend it vs. my school's required Lange book.

Anyone worrying about Step 1 at this point needs to have another drink. Seriously, it's October.

You know, and remember, more than you think you do. Best thing you can do is do well with where you are in your curriculum now -- when you start reviewing in March/April or whatever, things will come back to you.

I tell myself this, but I am terrified at the prospects of taking a test on material that I have largely forgotten. Not to mention that it includes a metric **** ton of material. And, you know, it can like, determine your job prospects and stuff.

That is the difficulty. It's tough to calm down because I realize how much material I am learning every week. Maybe I should calm down. It's a bit tough though when you have fellow second years running around telling you that they are doing UWORLD and they are killing it. Stuff like this gets into your head!

They're probably lying...I don't think anyone is "killing" UWorld at this point. Doing questions maybe but probably getting most of them wrong.

i wouldnt worry too hard at this point. what can you do now? take a look at how your school handles step 1 (do they give you time off? how much time? etc.), if you dont get any time off start doing some uworld/usmlerx questions this spring and as your test date approaches hit first aid, supplemental resources and qbanks HARD.... if you do get time (6 weeks or more) do all of your studying during this allotted time.

hope that helps a little...

Best way to study for step 1 is to learn the material you're studying the best you can for classes. Don't worry if you suddenly forgot that the philly chromosome is a 9;22 translocation and last month you didn't even have to think about it before you regurgitated it out. Instead, focus on whatever you're supposed to be learning now and do it well. If you do that you'll be fine. You will be surprised how much you remember with just a little review. Same goes for Step 2 and I'm sure for Step 3. It's impossible to remember it all.

I'm happy when I can hit a 70 on the subset of material that I am currently studying for class 😀

A mighty bump:

It is wise to start doing UWorld in second year?

maybe
some people say save the questions some people say it doesn't hurt to do them twice
i did usmlerx during second year and followed a little on first aid. listened to goljan and watched pathoma
in my dedicated period i redid goljan pathoma first aid and did uworld. major reason was that 1 year of uworld is expensive
just one person's experience
