Should i even bother bother applying to an allopathic school? what are my chances? I am a NY resident. My gpa is 3.63 overall 3.33 science 26o Mcat, (10p9b7v) I am guessing my mcat is not competitive, Did anyone get in with a 26?

My courses are
bio 1 b-in class b- in lab also
Bio 2 A in class c in lab
Gen chem 1 b in class and lab
Gen chem 2 B+ in class and F in lab and i retook it & got a B-
Physics 1 A- in class and lab
Physics 2 A- in class and lab
Orgo 1 B- in class and lab
Orgo 2 A in class and lab
Calc 1 B+
Stats 1 b+
Stats 2 A

will no biochem and the F in chem 2 lab be the nail in the coffin?

I think the first thing you need to do is work on the MCAT. Try and get a 30.
OP - You really don't have much remediation work to do. Get the VR up. The other sections will take care of themselves as you practice the exam more, and NYS has TONS of schools. I've seen plenty with worse stats and they got in.

To paraphrase Brimley - apply early, apply broadly, apply to many schools.

I think you have a reasonable possibility of getting in somewhere. Remember, the average mcat score for accepted med students is a 29..which means that half of all accepted students get under that. (although that still seems odd to me that half actually get under 29, but thats a different issue..)

GPA is not bad..3.66 is fine; 3.33 will pull you down a bit, but still some schools will accept you.

Mcat: If you wanted to, I think you could definitely get your mcat up.. getting at least a 30 should be feasible to almost everyone who puts in a little effort.
Good luck

i know my verbal is my Achilles heal, and i could get it up, along with the physical science which i feel like i can get up (did better than the 10 on practice tests). But i feel i can only take mcat now in august or early sept which would be late for allopathic schools. I did apply to DO schools, and did get into one. It is not the school of my choice and it is new, and not a big fan of the area (Touro NY). I am still waiting for NYCOM, which i would matriculate if i get in. i took the jan mcat which shot me in the foot, and only really had a chance with state do schools. I am considering reapplying, but i am not sure. How bad is it if you take the late aug, sept mcat?

try waiting a year to boost mcat and gpa and gain extra curriculars.

take biochem during next year. it's not too late. put it as planned on amcas

Not sure where you got this 29 number. I think the number from last year was around 30.6. Maybe higher. I can't find the AMCAS link right now.

A 26 is really low. I would retake the MCAT if you are going to apply this year. Low BCPM and low MCAT will be a problem.

It also depends on which med school u are applying to, the some have a higher MCAT average then 30, others have a lower, some of the state schools in the south

True that individual schools are highly variable. I was referring to the average for all schools.

Get a copy of MSAR or check individual school websites.
Some of the state schools with lower numbers only accept applicants from that state. Doesn't help the OP unless he/she lives in that state.

Yeah, I think the actual number is 29.5 or something like that - although my info may be outdated. In any case, to the OP: it's not that difficult to get above a 30, so you can definitely get there with some effort.
