D.O. student. Did above average on COMLEX I but anything spectacular, did not take USMLE step 1 because I despise biochem and I would not have done well on it. So far I have all high pass (we don't do honors) in 6 clinicals and have done well on shelfs. The level 2 stuff comes to me much better than level 1 stuff. I'm sure I will do well on COMLEX II. Hypothetically, if I took only USMLE step 2, did well-ish (240+), and had some good LORs, do you think I would have a chance at an ACGME program? Location and hospital size does not matter to me at all (I.E. I will go anywhere).

I know it's hard to tell just based on one paragraph, I'm just trying to get a feel since many of you are much more familiar with the programs than I am.

Thanks ahead of time. 🙂

Do relatively well on step 1 (230+) and I'm sure you'll match somewhere, Bernie's younger M4 corpse self could match radiology somewhere nowadays.

LOL

Do your self a favor, match at academic places and not some crummy community place filled with FMGs

I was looking at some places in my home state and was surprised to see that ALL of the residents at one of them were IMGs. Surely they have room for one lil' D.O.... 😉

sounds like you are in NY state

Radiology job market is tight. When deciding on program, go big or go home.

It's really important right now to get into an academic, tertiary care center. Try to avoid community programs unless they are one of the few that have a good national reputation. Even as a D.O. there are some academic centers (especially in the Midwest) that would be open to you.

This is a simple risk reward relationship. The risk is going through 6 years of training (while you make enough just to survive and loans keep on accumulating) and then not finding a job or finding a terrible job in a terrible location. To be compensated for the amount of risk you take on, you should choose a high quality program.

This is similar to the current "junk bond" market. With multiple US energy companies at risk of defaulting on their debt, junk and corporates bonds have to offer higher rates than quality bonds to attract buyers. Otherwise it is not worth it.

In terms of choosing a high quality program, how far down the Doximity ranking would you guys go? Or is any academic center acceptable? Location isn't as big of a deal as long as it's great training with good national recognition

I hear ya post #9. The thing is I think I have an edge as far as finding a job would go. It would be my dream to live in podunkville. I'm looking at a job right now in the middle of nowhere in my home state. If something like that would be available after residency I would be in hog heaven.

Not all academic programs are the same. For example, UCSF is a much bigger name than any of the programs in the 20 to 25 range. I think there's a drop off in the 10 to 15 range.
