I am currently attending Tarrant County College (even though its not considered "community college" anymore I still see it that way). Fall2009 semester will be my last semester there and then I am transferring to Tartleton for the rest of my classes. I finished Spr2009 semester with a 3.25 (not too bad, but def not good enough) but keep in mind that that was my first semester of college ever and I was taking 16 hours while working and volunteering religiously haha. Question is... does anyone have any suggestions that I would help me? I volunteered at the Ft Worth Zoo in the hospital area for 5 months and I have worked in SA clinics for the past year. I am open to any advice anyone has to give! Also, I am still a little unclear on exactly when you are supposed to apply to vet school. Thank you.

If you're going straight from undergrad to vet school, then you would start your application the summer between junior and senior years. The application deadline is October of your senior year, and you would have interviews during the winter / spring of your senior year.

If you want to have a year off in between undergrad and vet school, then you would apply the summer after your senior year.

Some people apply the summer after their sophomore year and if accepted enter vet school with only three years of undergrad completed... but that is a small percentage of people that do it that way.

You can apply whenever you have your pre-req courses finished... so, since most school let you finish up in the spring, you can apply the fall before that. But keep in mind that there's no reason to rush yourself - you should try and enjoy your time as an undergraduate while you can. 🙂

Getting the experience started is good. Look for some large animal experience as well, and make sure that you form bonds/make good impressions on some vets you work with so that you'll have some good people to ask for letters of reccomendation when the time comes.

I'm looking for LA experience now...all the equine clinics around here dont even have room for volunteers/shadowing but I'm being persistent!! Thanks for clearing my question up also! 🙂
