Hi All,

I just got my 1st acceptance to Temple and I am ecstatic. The only thing that is slightly bothering me is the school's probation status. Do you guys think the school has it under control?
Thanks for the input!

I interviewed and got accepted at Temple too. Their probation status is because of their older facilities and amount of debt an average student accumulates by going there. They're addressing the facilities issue by constructing a new medical school building, but that probably won't be done until you're almost done with med school. I don't know how much they can really do about the financial aid situation. They don't have the $$$ that some other schools have. However, I think that you can get a solid education there because the deficits cited for the probation had nothing to do with the quality of the academic program. Search for one of the many threads on this topic.

There was a site visit in november by the lcme so that the probation could be reevaluated. There should be a resolution to the situation soon (a few weeks? a few months?).

We were visited in November and expect to hear the answer in Feb sometime. From what I heard the visit went really well and there isn't a reason to expect the probation to be continued. Our class size was reduced to provide more $ for each student, they have made changes to our study areas and classroom modules, and they are getting ready to start construction on the new medical school building. Those changes address all the concerns that brought about the probation in the first place. I accepted when they were on it and my experience so far has been fine. One of the things I really like is the wireless internet and my roommate's school doesn't even have that, so I am happier with our facilities in some ways than I would be with hers. If you like the school it's silly to let the probation be a reason to not come here.

My $0.02

i would be more worried about the students you will meet there (eg jmwalker) 😀

Interesting coincidence. I interviewed at Temple on the same day that the LCME came to visit. In fact, the faculty member who interviewed me was one of the representatives from Temple. He was supposed to meet with the LCME after my interview. I thought the interview didn't go so well because the interviewer was somewhat socially ackward. He spoke really softly, stared at me oddly during pauses, and there were moments of dead silence. I think the dread of talking to LCME put him in a bad mood and he was so uplifted by how well the LCME visit went that he accepted me. 🙂

I can't say, but let's just say that you would know him if I did tell.

i'm a 4th-year student at temple. most of us were actually happy about the probation. there was supposed to be a new medical school building constructed years ago, but it was delayed due to "politics" between the medical school and the university...

the probation left the university no choice, and the project to build a new medical school (which also requires tearing down some buildings and adding a parking garage) is underway. temporatry measures have been taken to improve study space. class sizes have been reduced, which impoves student financial aid. i would be shocked if the school was not off probation following the recent review.

if you liked the school when you visited, then you should have no reservations about coming to temple. i got a good education here and it got me where i wanted to go (matched into a surgical subspecialty).

good luck.

I'll second that!

PS: You can't say Temple doesn't have the room to expand at least. You knock down a row of crack houses and build something new. How sweet is that? I guess the only problem is finding housing for the displaced pimps and addicts, but you can send em down here to West Philly. I give you permission 🙂

dingiswayo - congrats! 🙂 Did you match into urology?
