I know that last year a few Texas schools sent out "thank you" letters or made "phone calls" to applicants in mid-January. Has anyone got something like that this year? A friend that interviewed a several schools last year got a Christmas greeting from one school, and a phone call from another. Just curious if this years applicants had gotten anything like this?

Just this evening I got a phone call from a UTMB student.

Yep, I got that same call. Congrats, Ms. A! Maybe Halloween was a lucky day.

Let's hope so! I felt, bad, though, since I couldn't speak with the guy for long - I had my wisdom teeth (all 4) out this morning, and basically had to mumble through gobs of gauze that, no, I didn't have any questions for him.

Does anyone know if UT Houston does the same sort of thing?

I got a call from UTMB too last night, they were very nice on the phone. As for others only a letter about how to rank UT-San Antonio and a reminder to do my rankings from someone.

Can you tell us about your letter from San Antonio? When did you get it? Who wrote it?

I received a letter from UTHSCSA (about two weeks ago) concerning Harlingen and a general email recently reminding those who interviewed at Texas schools to submit the rankings by Jan 15. That's all I have heard.

Anyone else get info from UTHSCSA sent to them in the mail?

I got the letter about Harlingen also...

Thanks for the date!!! I interviewed on the 8th of December...we may have just slipped through the cracks hopefully!

It just talked about the deal with Harlingen so that you could take it into account when ranking the program. Hope that helps...

All the letter talked about was how they were going to pick people to go to harlingen, they had wanted to list in in the match but aren't doing it. so later on they will ask people who match where they want to go, if they want to stay in SA or go to Harlingen. nothing to terrible! We are getting closer!

Anyone else having a hell of a time ranking the schools???

at this point you've probably been thinking about it for months and you probably really do know where you want to go, so just rank it and be at peace.

if you need to, think about how you would feel for each school if you opened up the webpage and saw its name on your page.

there is no magic system to beating the match, its very straightforward, if a school ranks you high enough on their match list to get in, you will. all dependent on how the people above you ranked and how the school views and ranked you.

Yikes! Poor thing.

I haven't heard from UT Houston, and I haven't heard of anyone hearing from UTH (does that make any sense?), so I'm guessing that they haven't sent anything out.

I received a letter pretty quickly post-interview from UTH last year.

Who knows, maybe they changed things this year.

i got a voice mail message from a utmb first year... i guess i will call whoever at utmb tomorrow. are we supposed to read anything into this call?

just got a call from a utmb student. i think everyone gets the call...?

and on the uthscsa letter - i'm pretty sure everyone gets it b/c dr. jones mentioned on the day we interviewed that we'd all be getting letters with the final world on how the whole harlingen thing would play out.

i haven't gotten anything else from any other tx school (incl uth). i guess seaworth is just very special. 😉

Call from a first year UTMB student late last night. He said he was calling about 75 people a day.

Thanks for the info everyone about San Antonio. I talked with another poster to SDN who I interviewed with on the same day, Dec 8th, hasn't received one yet either. What was mentioned the day of our interview probably covers the letter that was sent out on Dec 15th. I appreciate very much hearing what Spumoni shared about the letter going out to everyone and I thank EvoDevo for the date of the letter...this has calmed my fears about not getting a letter and that being a sign of bad news.
Sorry about the paranoia at the last minute...I was fine until I read this thread, but it is nice to know now that this is no big deal. Thanks everyone!

I won't argue you on that point. 😉

hi stac,

no worries. i understand how sdn can sometimes contribute to unfounded premed nerves/paranoia though. however, i'm *positive* that in this case, you have nothing to worry about for uthscsa. the letter is purely an administrative thing b/c they didn't have the details for harlingen worked out definitely at the time of the interviews. and i do definitely recall dr. jones mentioning that some form of correspondence would be sent out to *all* interviewees confirming how the harlingen ranking process would go. trust me, it's really not a big deal! things do get lost in the mail. alternatively, the details of harlingen might have already been worked out by dec. 8th, and thus there might not have been a need to send out a letter. anyway, it's all good. good luck to you on the match!

Yes they are right, I am sorry if I caused any confusion, but when I interviewed they didnt know what they were doing so I assume that is why not all applicants got it if you already knew what they were saying! So sorry! I knew it was no big deal but thought I would appologize for making anyone freak! Thanks

You are so cool...I really mean that. I have read a lot of your post on line as it looks as though many of us swim in the same places and I just get a great feeling about you as a person. I bet you make your momma proud!

No biggy! The funny thing was that I thought I was immune to all the paranoia...
I found out that I am actually not as sure about everything after all. And thats good!!! Doubt helps keep from getting to disappointed in the end and if it so happens that I need to reapply next year...then that's O.K. Because it isn't a question of IF I'll be a physician, its WHEN I'll be a physician. I honestly believe that God has a way of working these things out and we aren't given more than we can handle in life. Sorry...random thoughts! Take care.

hey all,

i'm having a tough time choosing which school to rank higher: UTMB or A&M...

does anyone have any advice?

thanx...

yes. what she said. exactly what dr. jones said to our group. 🙂

Good luck everyone!!

arehmat,

UTMB is a decent school that's pretty chill. Some plusses include plenty of reading time during your 1st and 2nd years, very cohesive class with really cool people, a nice gym with tennis courts and fields to play sports, very low cost of living, the beach, opportunity to do 3rd year and 4th year rotations in Austin, opportunity to succeed if you really wanted to. Some minuses include no syllabus in 1st and 2nd year, bureaucracy, menopausal ghetto nurses with attitude problems, lack of good food on the island, ghetto bastards who talk on cell phones in the movie theater, potentially limited dating scene, mosquitoes during the summer.

Anyways, just realize that there is no wrong answer as to which school you rank higher. It's up to you to make the most of your education.

Yeah, that's typical UTMB administration. We've got a bunch of ******s running the place.

i never recieved any call from UTMB either, but a lot of my friends did. anyone know why? my numbers are decent (or so i thought)3.97 and 29 MCAT. what do yall think? i also got interviews to everywehre in texas and baylor. what do yall think my chances are of getting in one of my top 3 choices?

Dude,
Don't worry. They hand med student volunteers a list of interviewees and tell them to call. The bribe was pizza and coke. What probably happened was either the students got your answering machine and didn't leave a message or they ran out of time and didn't get to you. It has nothing to do with your chances. The volunteers at the phone-a-thon were just out there to answer questions about the school after some time has passed since your interview.

So it wasn't the ****** administrators... it was the ****** students.
