Hey,

I'm a year away from applying, but have been looking at schools for the last few weeks.

I have to say so far I am most impressed by Case Western's program.

So two questions:

-Any tips for how to specifically get into Case?

-Anything I can do before applying or along the way to make sure they know I am interested (and know who I am)?

Any other tips or advice from Case accepties or attendies would be great!

Oh and you can pm me if you would rather.

Thanks

lg

i absolutely have no idea why case accepted me. so, if you can find a lesson there, there ya go.

If you have any questions, direct it to Mr. Dalsky, the director of admission. But make sure you have researched about Case thoroughly though so you don't ask any stupid questions that can be found on the school's website. One of the potential question that you can ask him is the new curriculum (where the schedule is completely different to the current one), and ask him how it works? You may even ask him to provide some information about Case (ie: application booklets - in the old one, they listed their criteria in choosing their applicants from their interviews). Just e-mail him periodically so that he will remember you. You can also ask him what you can do to increase your competitiveness at Case.

G luck

I'm with Polarnut. My stats aren't fantastic (3.5 GPA, 3.4 Sci, 20's on the DAT) and Case accepted me. I think the fact that I really made them believe that Case was my #1 choice, made a difference. Also, when the interviewers provide you with info about the school, act VERY impressed and offer praise about how the school does things. Everyone seemed very proud of the school. Also, get to know Phil Aftoora if you can. He interviewed me, and is a very down-to-earth, tell-it-like-it-is, individual. He is way cool and has a strong influence on the admissions committee decisions.

your stats aren't fantastic... are you one of those over-achievers?

Apply early is the trump card. CASE starts earlier than most schools and they interview tons of people before december first. So usually if you have decent stats and don't blow your interview then you will get a pretty letter in your mailbox around December 3rd. Just make sure you apply early! Meaning apply the first day they let you. Just have everything else filled out and ready to go then just push submit.

Good luck.

I got my undergraduate degree from Case -- does anyone know if they will look favorably at that? Case is by far my first choice... I think I have competitive stats (3.6/3.7)... I can already tell that this process is going to be sooo stressful.

And I am definitely going to submit my application during the first week! 🙂

Case is also the first and only school to send rejections in July and August. yes, thats early.

Sounds great. Thanks for all the info.

Also I think they have posted their new curicculum info, does this look like what you're talking about?:

http://dental.case.edu/cic/

If so, then I probably should aviod asking about that.

So maybe just send Mr. Dalsky a letter introducing myself, saying where I'm from, saying I will be applying in a year, and expressing my interest in their school, and request a brochure or viewbook? Good enough? or add/delete stuff from that idea.

Thanks again for everyone's advice, and if anyone want to add anything else, that would be great. Especially any other ideas on how to make myself known to the people who run the addmissions show.

Yes, this is. What I means is that look through the new curriculum and if you do have any questions about it, then you can certainly ask Mr. Dalsky. Looking at it myself, I see that the schedule have completely changed. It looks like they are setting modules that last over several months. Because we currently operates in semester style, this new 'modules' style looks confusing to me.

I think you should consider building a few billion houses for homeless people. Dental schools will really be able to see the nobility of your spirit if you do it by yourself and its a great way to get an edge on the competition.

Hermey's top 5 tips for getting into any dental school:
1. Be a native american/black handicapped lesbian from an underserved area.
2. Have parents wealthy and generous enough to actually have a building at the dental school named after them.
3. Letters of reference from past US presidents or Nobel prize winners are always a plus.
4. Several years of service in a third world country teaching orphans to read...orphans with diseases.
5. Don't use the phrase "Helping people" or "Show me the money" during your interview.

I'd say if you have 3/5, you should be set at any dental school in the country. You're welcome.

I just realized that maybe I don't quite get what problem based learning is all about. Is it really more independent based or is it more teamwork based? From what I read about Case I was getting the vibe that is was very small group oriented, but am I not getting the correct picture? I would like to go somewhere that has a good amount of group learning, rather than me just being stuck by myself learning stuff like how it is now in undergrad.

thanks.

I'm reviving this post because I wanted to know something about the school as well...

There seems to be a larger male:female ratio. Does Case prefer men?

amen... I sent in my application mid-July and the earliest date I got for an interview was an alternate spot in mid-March!

goodluck to you

Part of the reason for the larger male:female ratio is that Case does accept a fair amount of mormons and they are all male.
