Hi. I'll be entering UCLA as a D1 this Sept.
We are required to collect about 100-150 teeth.
Please advice on how to go about collecting teeth. Where to go, what to do, etc. We are informed that the most difficult teeth to find are cavity free, bicuspids, first molars, and upper front teeth. I wouldnt see a good reason to have these teeth extracted either unless the patients are preparing to get braces. Anyway, I'm not sure if I should go to an oral surgeon or an orthodontist to collect teeth.

I'm also interested in hearing your experience regarding teeth collection.

Thanks

I think its pretty stupid to collect teeth....most teeth ive seen get pull while assisting have all been jacked up. its not often the tooth gets pulled out perfectly intact, it usually breaks into a couple of pieces. what are you gonna do with that? my 2 cents...

100-150!! that's easy we have to have 2 quarts for LSU!

ha, case doesn't make us collect any teeth

Contact an oral surgeon

Contact periodontists too...I have eight people collecting for me, just by walking right in the office, introducing myself, and bringing a long the teeth collecting memo. Most dentists will agree to collect for you...but the staff will call you strange.

Try community clinics.. they tend to do lots of extractions due to decay or perio reason..

Yes, definitely contact periodontists. This is your best bet for intact, caries-free teeth. Also less "jacked up" extractions due to severe bone loss making exts sometimes easier, keeping the tooth in one piece.

is this a common request for Dental Schools? Do you know what do you have to do with them?

You didn't understand my question. I'd like to know if most schools ask to do this...what do they do with them? Besides "hmmm they collect them for dental school" that I already know!! :meanie:

UCLA told us that these teeth are used for our restorative dentistry classes. They are meant for practice before we start working on real patients. Consider this a transition period.

go to a bar, get drunk, and sock someone in the mouth.. When he punches you back, pretend to fall to the ground while you search for his teeth on the floor. 😀

seriously though, my sister (dentist now) used to collect teeth. Eventually there were random lying all over the house (which can be unnerving when you see it unexpectedly). I just saw a small jar of them cleaning my room today.. 😳
