Im just entering undergrad so I got a long ways. Never too early to get tips 🙂. Plastics is what I want to do. Its where my passion is and where it has been for a long while.

Tip #1: Get into med school 🙂 (Study, study, study!)

Tip #2: Keep an open mind. It is certainly nice to have a goal to shoot towards. But being dead set on plastics at this point in the game means you're basing all your judgements on something else besides medical experience. (I'm guessing Nip/Tuck or Dr. 90210) I'm glad you feel some passion towards plastics but I doubt it has been for a long while.

After all, I have yet to meet a high schooler whose life calling is plastic surgeon.

lol. Yes, my decision is influenced by other things 🙂. One being when I was 1 year old I was electrocuted and flung backwards. Clinically dead for a while, surgeon had to fly in because of the extent of the burn on my hand. Said I would most likely never have feeling in my left hand. Both hands feel exactly the same. No difference at all. So I have always felt the want to be a surgeon and use my hands. Also my love for Africa and Operation Smile and what Ive read about both things over the past 2 years have influenced me. Right now I just do what I can financially out of the money I make each month. I just watched a few episodes of Dr. 90210 a few days ago to see what its all about. Seems interesting. Never seen nip/tuck. But Dr. 90210 so far from what I seen is all cosmetic. Would love to see a reconstructive surgery on tv. No offense to anyone but I think having your influence being a reality show/tv show of doing something seems a bit odd to me. Right now im suppose to be going on a relief work trip to Africa but its not medically related. (Samaritan's Purse) I really want to do some medical volunteering though the rest of the summer or even a medical missions trip! 2 trips in one summer would be awesome. There is one more thing that's also a big influence for me to enter the field but it's much more personal and I dont really want to talk about it here.

But your experience did bring up an interesting point.

I've always wondered if it was a good idea to bring up past medical issues as a reason for going into a medical field. I've always thought that if you aren't lying, then it seems like a perfectly valid reason. It is an experience that has affected you and that you now show an academic interest in.

However, all I keep hearing from residency directors is that they absolutely hate it when kids tell them, "I've worn glasses since I was 5 and that is why I want to go into ophtho" or "I have psoriasis and that is why I want to enter derm"

My question is then, how do you answer this question: "Why do you want to enter [insert field here]?"

Yeah definently have the proof on my hand and thigh.

Well I think it all depends on how severe it is. How many people have been clinically dead, needed a specialist flown in out of all the applicants? compared to how many people wear glasses or have psoriasis. If I was a residency director and it was something not so amazing I might be annoyed if I have a bunch of applicants saying the same thing. But for an interview I would always think say things that make you stand out.
