Just wondering if any UCLA dental students have used (or do use) a mac as their required lap top? If so, what type of problems (if any) have you experienced with UCLA-dental-specific programs, CDs, websites etc.?

Are you even "allowed" to use a mac as your required lap top?

Thanks

nope. it's not compatible with the clinic software.

The biggest problem in general with Macs and dentistry is that there currently are only 2 Mac based practice management software programs on the market vs. literall over 100 windows based systems. The only reason I know the exact Mac based numbers is that one of my colleagues and good friends that practices in the same town that I do is one of the few Mac based offices out there. And roughly 3 or 4 times a year I'll hear him griping about how limited the Mac practice management software and the interfacing with digital x-rays and e claims filing are.

The reality is that dentistry is a windows world.

Ahh, but it is now. Macs, now that they use an Intel chipset, can run Windows XP alongside OS X. It isn't a dual boot system, but the user is given a choice at a bootloader screen upon startup.

Those with Intel Macs that want to run Windows XP, may download the bootloader here: http://onmac.net/

Sweet! I'm gonna ask the computer nerds in the basement about this on Monday!

Gavin the only thing is that amongst the practicing dental Mac addicts, the main reason that they use their Macs is a perception that Intel = Microsoft = Bill Gates = Evil 😉 :scared: 😀

So even though in theory now with the intel chips in Mac that a Mac could run and handle a windows based system, then their beloved Macs become what they don't want, a windows system 🙄 You'll see over the years as you meet more and more dentists that their are really some out there with pecular behaviors/views 😕 😱 😀
