Anybody spent new years in times square?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It's crowded and cold but enjoyable depending on your company. 😀

As a Manhattanite, I can say with no hesitation that that is the last place I will ever be on New Years Eve. Unless it is unseasonably warm (as it has been a couple times in recent memory), its beyond freezing. You have to get there hours and hours ahead of time, and then are stuck there. Much rather be with friends inside at a party that had huge windows where you can see the fireworks (there are some over central park as well, by the way - and if you are on the upper east side, you can see the start of the new years race that kicks off at the stroke of midnight. in the cold. crazy people).

Last year I spent the New Year with my parents (we bonded over movies, it was kinda cute) and we watched the ball drop and we were talking about how amazing it was that Time's Square is so Disney-ified now. It used to be that you would watch the ball drop, and the second it happened everyone would leave, within half an hour the area was abandoned. Now the party keeps going.

So yeah, it's not unsafe, if thats a concern. It's way too much a slice of MTV at this point to even be fun (unsafe Time's Square at least had a personality...)

The whole thing though is just not my cup of tea. May be your's though. 😛

emily i am totally with you. im a manhattanite too and times square is by far the LAST place i will find myself on new years eve. i try to avoid times square at all costs as it is! my idea of standing around in the FREEZING cold for twelve straight hours not being able to MOVE is NOT my idea of a good time, but it IS my idea of a pretty good nightmare. its so "family oriented" and bullsh*t carson-daly-TRL-ified these days anyway. i have no idea why its so popular anyway. i usually spend my new years eves at my place in vegas where its actually WARM and scandal-icious 😉

oh yea if safety is your concern, dont be worried at all. you will totally be fine. all of new york city is totally safe now thanks to rudy & the fun police. but anyway if you DO decide to come to nyc for nye... then stick around for a couple days and really hang out in the city. i hope you end up loving it as much as i do.

i was in times square for new years a few years ago-- you have to get there hours and hours ahead of time and they herd you into these baracaded sections which you can't get out of until the whole thing is over. people drink their weight in alcohol while standing there so everyone is peeing in the gutters and puking on the sidewalks. but it's not so bad if you're drunk as well-- at least then it isn't so cold. remember, though, that it's hard to stay drunk for 8+ hours without feeling really, really ****ty.

...Not to mention that if you are not familiar with NYC, the experience can be sobering. Try going to the city before hand to get an idea of direction, etc. I would not recommend if you have never been before, it is one of the craziest times in NYC. Alternatively, go with someone who is familiar with the area. Dress warm and know where you are and you are good, however easier said than done!

sundarban the tiger sanctuary in w.bengal??? kamon acho!

i haven't been to times square, but i have friends who have, and swore they would never go again. my friend showed up at 10 am to wait, and she still didn't get within vision of the ball. you're just crowded, and you have no idea when the countdown is, until for some reason - people around you start yelling and confettie starts flying. then you just yell and scream along because you have no clue what's going on - but you figure the new year must've passed in the last few minutes or so. i'd say there are better ways to spend new year's.

No, man-eating tigers! The only known population to do so in the world! These unusual creatures of the Sundarbans-a mangrove forest stretching along the Bay of Bengal in India and Bangladesh-really do hunt and eat humans. When I was in college I met author Sy Montgomery, who lives in New Hampshire, through my advisor. She wrote a book "spell of the tiger" recording her trip to India to investigate this specific animal population. Great book!
👍

I'll reply before this is moved-

The only thing I remember about the whole thing was a lot of obnoxious people trying to stay warm, and having to go the bathroom was a huge chore (plus there was a heavy smell of urine)- a much better time is doing the harbor cruises around the statue of liberty.

yea, paradise on the hudson is fun. i normally dont do touristy things but i was with some friends who never saw the statue of lib before so we we went on this party aboard the circle line-it was a lot of boozin n cruisin. i would def recommend it ! but if you come to nyc, please spend some time looking at some cool stuff, go to museums, eat at some awesome places, check out some really hot architecture, go to a b'way show... but not times sq
yea im so sad times sq is gonna get so nasty w ppls bodily fluids year after year eww

New York (Manhattan) is the best for nye, but not because of times square; you're better off going out to the bars! in TS i'm pretty sure you can't bring in alcohol, which mean's you'll be sober and feeling the cold. the whole thing might leave you feeling very misanthropic after 12 hours of waiting.

I am the one who started this thread and I have an important question. Some of you are saying there is no alcohol aloud in times square and some of you say people are puking they're guts out like its a huge party. Which one is it b/c I am seriously thinking about going but I don't want to if it sucks.

If I want to have a good time and party hard is it the place?

Being in Rock center for the tree lighting has erased any desire I ever had to go to Times Square for New Years Eve. 👎

i wouldnt go to times square on any other day of the year....why would i go to times square for new years.

fact is times square is cool when youre a tourist or visiting. yeah when i first came to NYC i was enthralled by it...but uh after a week or so...you realize new york is NOT times square....

Due to heightened security, once you get to times square they baracade you in and you cannot get out. Biggest problem with this is having to go to the bathroom. People pee all over the place, on the streets, it is sick. No one who lives in NY goes, we all know better. Go to a bar where you will be warm and dry!
