Hi, I am interested in learning more about anesthesiology because of my background in chemistry, but I would also like to continue to do research. Is this possible in anesthesiology? Which universities, if any, have anesthesiological research programs? What kind of work do they do?

You would be able to do research without a doubt. I would focus on the larger academic programs if you want to do basic science research. Clinical research is available at most programs. Basic science research in anesthesiology focuses on mechanisms of action of drugs, chemicals, toxins, and pathological mechanisms at the cellular level or beyond.

Do you do research, UT? Is there anyone on here I can talk to about this?

I asked to the same question and got about the same number of responses. Either people dont do research, ot they dont want to discuss it.

Probably most of the people here are clinical and so they can't tell us too much. I did find a doc at my university who is an MD/PhD and does anesthesiology research. I am going to start shadowing him. His PhD is in pharm, which isn't the same as mine will be, but it's related enough that I ought to be able to at least have a clue of what he's talking about!!! 😛 Maybe try the UT med school anesthesiology dept. and see if you have anyone like that there.
